The Jangrok Wetland Protection Area is the first urban wetland protection Area in Korea. Located in downtown Gwangju, the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area is an urban wetland that is highly frequented by the people of the city. It is also a river wetland facing severe disturbances to its wetland ecosystem due to flooding and inundation. Through flora research on the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area, this study aims to provide basic data for the protection, maintenance, and restoration of the biodiversity in the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area. This study conducted a survey flora of the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area. And through this result classified and cataloged rare plants, endemic plants, specific plants by floristic region, alien plants, naturalized plants and ecosystem disturbed plants. And analyzed the naturalized index and urbanization index and drew the actual vegetation map. The vascular flora of the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area was identified 336 taxa including 78 families, 226 genera; 302 species, 7 subspecies, 22 varieties, 2 forma and 3 hybrids. The number of taxa has nearly doubled since the study conducted by the National Wetlands Center in 2018 (179 taxa). In particular, compared to the number of native, the number of naturalized plants has increased from 39 taxa (National Wetlands Center, 2018) to 65 taxa, and the number of ecosystem disturbed plants has increased from 4 taxa (National Wetlands Center, 2018) to 9 taxa. Similar to other typical rivers and wetlands, a high rate of appearance of Poaceae and Asteraceae was observed in the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area. The river wetland is thought to present favorable conditions for appearance of Poaceae due to an abundance of sunlight and periodic environmental changes due to rainfall. Among the vascular flora of the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area, four taxa of rare plants were identified such as Penthorum chinense, Melothria japonica, Chionanthus retusus, and Iris ensata all belonging to the LC (Least Concern) category. Chionanthus retusus and Iris ensata were found to have been planted, and Penthorum chinense and Melothria japonica were found downstream in the wetland, in the same general area as in the study conducted by the National Wetlands Center (2018). Three taxa of endemic plants have been identified: Populus × tomentiglandulosa, Salix pseudolasiogyne, and Forsythia Koreana. Populus × tomentiglandulosa and Forsythia Koreana were identified as having been planted and Salix pseudolasiogyne to be growing wild. Salix pseudolasiogyne is found throughout the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area and its habitat condition is thought to continue to remain in the current state even without particular care. A total of 31 taxa of specific plants by floristic region have been identified. This represents 9.2% of all vascular plants identified in the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area and 2.1% of all specific plants by floristic region (1,476 taxa). A single taxon of Medicago ruthenica in grade V, 2 taxa of Quercus myrsinaefolia and Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides in grade IV, 4 taxa of Quercus acuta, Melia azedarach, Acer palmatum, and Chionanthus retusus in grade III, 4 taxa of Penthorum chinense, Euonymus macroptera, Alisma plantago-aquatica, and Iris ensata in grade II were identified, along with 20 taxa of Juglans mandshurica, Salix chaenomeloides, Aphanathe aspera, Ulmus davidiana var. japonica, Ulmus parvifolia, Neolitsea sericea, and others in grade I. Compared to the study by the National Wetlands Center (2018), an increase of 19 taxa has been confirmed. A total of 18 families and 67 taxa of alien plants and (i.e., 66 taxa of naturalized plants and a single taxon of uncertain Plant) have been identified in the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area. In particular, the 66 taxa of naturalized plants represent a more than 50% increase compared to the study by the National Wetlands Center (2018). This is thought to be the result of an influx of naturalized plants with excellent reproductivity and adaptability due to the increased non-natural interference from using the riverside for things such as bicycle lanes, walking paths, and riverside parks and due to frequent environmental changes and disturbances in the wetland ecosystem caused by flooding. The naturalized index of the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area is 19.6% and is the third highest among Korea’s inland wetlands protection Areas, coming after the Nakdong River Estuary (23.2%) and the Damyang River Wetland (20.8%) [Jo. G. J., et al., 2020]. The urbanization index of the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area is 27.1% and is confirmed to be the wetland with the highest urbanization index among the 21 inland wetlands protection Areas (Jo. G. J. et al., 2020). Nine taxa of ecosystem disturbed plants have been identified: Humulus scandens, Rumex acetosella, Sicyos angulatus, Solanum carolinense, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Symphyotrichum pilosum, Lactuca serriola, Solidago altissima, and Paspalum distichum var. indutum. Of the 16 taxa of ecosystem disturbed plants, 56.2% are present in the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area, and in particular, Humulus japonicus, Solanum carolinense, Solidago altissima are found communities distribution throughout the protection Area. Compared to the study by the National Wetlands Center (2018), 5 additional taxa have been identified, confirming a rapid influx of ecosystem disturbed plants. Such a rapid increase of ecosystem disturbed plants endangers native and poses a high risk of simplifying the wetland ecosystem, calling for an urgent need for ecosystem disturbed plants control. Based on the list of categorized vascular plants according to the “Wetland Preference and Life form of the Vascular Plants in the Korean Peninsula" (Jong. Y. S. et al., 2020), I have analyzed the wetland preference and life form of the entire 299 taxa (excluding the 37 that were removed from the 2020 study). The results show a threefold increase of obligate upland plants and facultative upland plants (190 taxa total) over obligate wetland plants and facultative wetland plants (59 taxa total). This is believed to be due illegal cultivation and a large number of trees planted along the boundary and within the Jangrok Wetland to create parks, walking paths, and bicycle lanes that are heavily used by people. Upon classifying and examining the 59 taxa of wetland plants (both obligate upland plants and facultative wetland plants), I have identified 20 taxa of aquatic plants (33.9%) and 39 taxa of wetland plants (66.1%). Furthermore, the 20 taxa of aquatic plants were classified into emergent (15 taxa, 25.4%), floating-leaved (2 taxa, 3.4%), free-floating (2 taxa, 3.4%), and submerged (1 taxon, 1.7%), confirming that emergent are the most prevalent type. Regarding the habitat of 299 taxa of vascular plants in the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area, I have identified a rate of appearance, 179 taxa (59.8%) to inhabit meadow and shrubland, 57 taxa (19.1%) grow in wet meadow, 43 taxa (14.4%) in forest, and 20 taxa (6.7%) aquatic environment. Outside of the river area, it is believed that the high presence of plants growing on meadow and shrubland is due to the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area experiencing little shade from trees and plenty of sunlight. Comparing the results of flora studies of the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area, the largest number of taxa was confirmed in this study. The number of taxa confirmed for naturalized plants and ecosystem disturbed plants is also greater in this study than in the previous one. The characteristics of the Jangnok Wetland Preservation Area as (a) an urban wetland adjacent to a residential area with a high level of non-natural interference due to walking paths within the preservation Area heavily used by the residents and as (b) a river wetland with frequent disturbances to the ecosystem due to flooding are thought to be the reasons for the rapid spread of alien plants and ecosystem disturbed plants. This kind of rapid spread of naturalized plants and ecosystem disturbed plants within the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area hinders the growth of native and poses a high risk of simplifying the wetland ecosystem. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that a detailed plan be devised for naturalized plants and ecosystem disturbed plants control such as continued monitoring and removal activities. It must be remembered that this study was conducted solely on the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area with no research conducted on the embankments, riversides, and water coursess adjacent to the wetland. Because the wetland flora is expected to vary depending on land use and type of use as well as flooding and inundation of the surrounding area, additional research on the surrounding area is necessary for precise management of the Jangrok Wetland Protection Area.
