Since 2016, the fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) which is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Western Hemisphere, has invaded Africa and further spread into Asian countries. FAW is a highly polyphagous species and has been recorded on at least 353 plant species, causing significant losses to crop yields, especially corn in most African and Asian countries. The genetic variation of invaded populations in Africa and Asia was analyzed by comparing the nucleotide sequences of two genes: the nuclear Z-chromosome linked gene triose phosphate isomerase (Tpi) and the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) of 27 specimens collected in Africa (DR Congo, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe) and Asia (Bangladesh, Korea, Nepal, and Vietnam). The results revealed that Tpi analysis showed all samples were corn strain while the COI analysis showed that all samples were rice strain except two samples. This indicated Tpi gene is a more confident molecular marker of host plant preference phenotype compared with the COI gene. The further analysis of the fourth exon and intron sequences of the Tpi gene showed the presence of at least four subgroups of the corn strain in Africa and Asia suggesting no significant genetic change due to the rapid migration within two years. The age-stage, two-sex life table was utilized to examine the development, survival, and reproduction rate of the corn strain FAW on three different host plants: corn, rice, and potato. The corn strain FAW completed its life cycle in three different plants. However, the growth, developmental time, survival, and reproduction rate differed among the three host plants. Interestingly, the net reproduction rate varied greatly among the three host plants. In corn-fed FAW, the net reproduction rate was 472 offspring per individual, whereas, in rice and potato crops, the rates were only 213 and 86 offspring per individual, respectively. These results suggest that alternative host plants, such as potato and rice, have more effect on reproduction than the growth of corn strain FAW. While various chemical pesticides have been applied for the control of FAW, it was not successful due to the development of pesticide resistance and the fact that repeated pesticide use can negatively affect human health and environmental safety. Therefore, it is necessary to develop alternative FAW control strategies, which include biological control with natural enemies and botanical pesticides. The virulence of seven entomopathogenic nematodes was compared against larval and pupal stages of FAW. Among them, Heterorhabditis indica, Steinernema carpocapsae, and S. longicaudum were highly virulent against larval and pupal stages. The Korean strain of entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium rileyi (KNU-Ye) was identified using morphological and molecular characterization and induced 89% mortality after 7 days post-treatment. The systemic effect of azadirachtin was evaluated and results showed that soil application of at least 10 ppm azadirachtin can disrupt the life cycle of FAW by inhibiting growth, development, and survival but didn’t show any phytotoxicity effects on corn plants. Thus, three biocontrol agents such as entomopathogenic nematodes, H. indica, S. carpocapsae, and S. longicaudum, entomopathogenic fungus, M. rileyi KNU-Ye strain, and soil application of azadirachtin could be used for integrated management of FAW in the fields.
