This dissertation attempts to apply the theory of trauma to the interpretation of four modern American war novels--Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms, Leslie Marmon Silko’s Ceremony, Toni Morrison’s Home, and Viet Thanh Nguyen’s The Sympathizer--that describe the traumatic experiences of different races in America, namely, the whites, the Native American, the African American, and the Vietnamese American. Trauma theory has been prominent in literary criticism since the 1990s, and it is now spreading globally with the increasing concerns about democracy, justice, and humanity in contemporary society. The introduction deals with the main theme of my dissertation. It starts with the investigation into the backgrounds of the four novels, the commonalities and differences of the novels from the perspective of war, and the existing research of these novels from the perspective of trauma. With the previous scrutinization, I come to propose the concept of comprehensive trauma which tries to integrate relevant theoretical frameworks from different disciplines to interpret these novels, and then to find out a practical mechanism for treatment. Chapter II discusses the characters’ war trauma in Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms, based on trauma theories from Sigmund Freud, Cathy Caruth, and Ruth Leys. Though they are representatives of trauma study from different disciplines, namely, psychology, literature and humanities, their frameworks of trauma study are integrated in the interpretation. Trauma theories by Freud, Caruth, Leys are adopted to reveal Catherine’s and Frederic’s psychological trauma. As to the characters’ healing process, the theory from Judith Herman’s research in psychology is applied to explain the importance of love and peace. Chapter III investigates Tayo’s trauma of genocide and WWI in Leslie Marmon Silko’s Ceremony based on the theoretical frameworks of cultural trauma in sociology and literature, which is represented by Neil Smelser, Aaron DeRosa, Ron Eyerman, and Jeffrey Alexander. Tayo’s cultural trauma is related to the destruction of Native American cultural elements which are caused by genocide. His severe PTSD is caused by or closely related to his traumatic war experiences and the deaths of his beloved mother, his uncle, and his brother. Tayo’s recovery follows the traditional Native American ceremony, which is supported by Smelser and Eyerman. Chapter IV delves into the trauma of racism and WWII in Toni Morrison’s Home, adapting theoretical frameworks from Dominick LaCapra and Elena Ruíz on structural trauma, in disciplines of history, literature and philosophy, in order to explore the characters’ adversities brought about by the problematics of social institutions. LaCapra’s concept and Ruíz’s concept are used to uncover Frank and Cee’s structural trauma in the 1950s America. This part also utilizes three concepts by Freud, Leys, and Caruth in order to analyze Frank’s PTSD. War causes him to lose his two best friends, to lose his humanity, to kill an innocent Korean girl, and to lose the ability to live a normal life. In order to cure trauma, Frank takes actions to embrace his past and seek solutions. Jennifer F. Clarke’s principle of bringing sick people into a state of wholeness directs Frank and Cee’s incomplete treatment. Chapter V examines the trauma of postcolonial hegemony and healing in Viet Thanh Nguyen’s The Sympathizer. This part adopts postcolonial theories in literature from Edward Said, Antonio Gramsci, Gayatri Spivak, and Michel Foucault, combined with trauma theories from Frantz Fanon, David Lloyd, Judith Herman, and Jeffrey Alexander. The protagonist’s healing process follows three ways, in which Michel Foucault’s theory of power and discourse, Edward Said’s theory are applied to solve the trauma of disenfranchised discourse. Homi Bhabha’s theory of hybridity is adapted to solve the trauma of cultural identity. Kwame Anthony Appiah’s theory of cosmopolitanism is used to handle the trauma of cultural hegemony. The conclusion is a summary of the previous chapters on how theoretical frameworks of trauma from different disciplines are applied to interpret different types of trauma in the four modern American novels, and how different methods of treatment are adopted to resolve trauma. The types of trauma are diversified owing to the fact that individual trauma differs from person to person, and collective trauma varies from race to race. Trauma can be caused by an overwhelming experience to an individual or a collective, which becomes the kernel of trauma and will be triggered later by any relevant event. In the four novels, the causes of trauma included historical events such as wars, genocide, racism, and colonial repression; and the triggers can be anything such as a memorial, a sentence, a piece of news, a smile, a color, a white sheet, a silhouette, and so on. Victims from different races and backgrounds can be treated using different methods. Though trauma cannot be narrated explicitly or cured completely, this dissertation attempts to expound the unremitting effort of the modern war novels in question in order to explore the nature of trauma from the different historical, social and geopolitical angles, paving a way for those marginalized to a free and democratic society where they do not testify violence, and do not witness horror.
