In this study, traumatized people were divided into two groups: interpersonal trauma group and impersonal trauma group. Mediating processes in the relation between intrusive rumination and post-traumatic growth were examined in each group. The relation was mediated by emotional approach coping and deliberate rumination, respectively. In addition, the dual mediating effect on the entire path from intrusive rumination through emotional approach coping and deliberate rumination to post-traumatic growth was also confirmed.
For this purpose, 500 adults (243 females, 273 males) over the age of 18 were surveyed via an online survey site. They were asked to respond to the Trauma Experience Questionnaire, the Event-Related Rumination Scale (K-SCS), and the Emotional Approaching Coping Scale (EAC) and the Post-Traumatic Growth Scale (K-PTG). These data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics Version 21.0 and AMOS 21.0.
As a result of the study, first, the inter-variable correlations were analyzed. In the interpersonal trauma group, intrusive rumination had a significant negative correlation with emotional approach coping and post-traumatic growth; Intrusive rumination showed a significant positive correlation with deliberate rumination. There was a significant positive correlation between emotional approach coping and post-traumatic growth. Deliberate rumination showed a significant positive correlation with post-traumatic growth. In the impersonal group, intrusive rumination had a significant positive correlation with deliberate rumination. Emotional approach coping showed a significant positive correlations with deliberate rumination and post-traumatic growth. Deliberate rumination had a significantly positive correlation with post-traumatic growth. Second, the mediating effect of deliberate rumination between intrusive rumination and post-traumatic growth was found in both the interpersonal trauma group and the impersonal trauma group. The mediating effect of emotional approach coping between intrusive rumination and post-traumatic growth was also found in the interpersonal trauma group. In addition, the dual mediating effect on the entire path from intrusive rumination through emotional approach coping and deliberate rumination to post-traumatic growth was also confirmed.
The results of this study empirically demonstrated the process by which an individual who had experienced a traumatic event transitioned from intrusive rumination to deliberate rumination toward post-traumatic growth. In addition, it was confirmed that emotional approach coping, which actively manages emotional pain, has an important effect during the cognitive process, rumination. Finally, this study has an clinical implication proposing that individuals who have experienced interpersonal trauma need an integrated cognitive and emotional intervention, since the effect of emotional approach coping was different after the intrusive rumination of the traumatic event.
