With the development of information and communication technology and the popularization of smartphones, there has been an accelerated growth of the e-commerce market. As the volume of online shopping transactions continues to thrive, shopping mall companies are incessantly introducing personalized recommendation services and online review platforms to improve both convenience and accessibility for their consumers. However, consumers have a potential distrust toward some online shopping malls, whether intended or not, distorting their products and services to be reflected only in a positive way. Therefore, consumers search for specific, reliable information about their interested products from online reviews written by other consumers, to lower the risk of misleading information and reflect them in their buying decisions. Although e-commerce platforms have introduced a variety of online review systems, consumers struggle to find reviews that can actually help them make buying decisions due to an exponentially increased number of online product reviews. To solve this information overload problem, e-commerce platforms such as Yelp, Amazon, and TripAdvisor have introduced a “review helpfulness voting” system that can evaluate the reliability of online review quality. Therefore, online review-related researchers and e-commerce platform managers are suggested to find a way to utilize helpful product reviews to support consumers' information search. This study incorporates “Analysis of the effect of review helpfulness and consistency on recommendation system performance in Internet shopping malls” as well as “Analysis of the effect of online review consistency and similarity on review helpfulness based on the elaboration likelihood model” to be studied. The first study investigated the effect on the performance of the recommendation system depending on what criteria the neighborhood formation was filtered during the construction of the recommendation system while having the review helpfulness and the review consistency (consistency between review ratings and review text sentiment) as the research object. The results are as follows. First, it was found that the accuracy of the recommendation system gets higher when a neighbor was selected among customers who wrote a consistent and helpful review compared to one selected out of all customers. Second, the effect of review helpfulness on recommendation accuracy and diversity was confirmed. In other words, regardless of the data set, using user profiles with helpful reviews enhances the recommendation accuracy. However, there was no statistically significant difference in the diversity of recommended items. Third, it was found that the accuracy of the recommendation system was better when neighbors were selected from customers who have written consistent reviews. Furthermore, using positive reviews among consistent reviews showed higher recommendation accuracy than solely using consistent reviews. In the second study, negative binomial regression analysis was performed using ELM (elaboration likelihood model) having review similarity and review consistency as central clues while maintaining rating inconsistency as peripheral clues. The analysis results are as follows. First, the greater the difference between the average rating and the individual rating, the lower the review helpfulness. This is because the average rating of a particular product represents the comprehensive, consistent opinion of other consumers, which in turn makes consumers believe that reviews consistent with the average rating are more reliable and helpful. Second, review helpfulness increases when the review content and individual ratings reflect consistent information. This provides empirical evidence that studies on review helpfulness ought to improve the limitations of existing studies that measure only a single effect of the review text. Third, review similarity was found to have a negative effect on review helpfulness. This can be interpreted as consumers perceiving the decreased credibility and helpfulness of a review whenever the information from the title gets repeatedly exposed within the content when searching for review information. Lastly, it was found that peripheral cues (score discrepancy) had more positive effects on review helpfulness of experience goods than of search goods. However, it was posited that the type of a product had no moderating effect to central cues (review consistency and review similarity) on review helpfulness. Regardless of the product type, this indicates that consumers consider both the review consistency and review similarity being inherent in reviews as important factors when making buying decisions. These results provide e-commerce companies the following insights. Despite a prevalent thought of having a better performed recommendation system in a plethora of customers and transaction data, research has continuously reported that its performance can rather become poorer because of excessive amounts of user transaction history data. As a result, this study demonstrates that the helpfulness as well as the consistency of reviews affect the recommendation performance. Therefore, it is more effective to establish a business strategy, such as the development of recommendation items and the selection of recommendation customers, through the use of helpful and consistent reviews that would match ratings and review sentiment, instead of all reviews. After examining the dynamics of online persuasion through review helpfulness, this study not only displays the effect on review helpfulness when the central clue (review similarity and review consistency) and peripheral clue (rating discrepancy) are simultaneously processed, but it also contributes to the research stream related to the review helpfulness and ELM. We also contribute to the literature on review helpfulness by identifying the effects of product types (experience and search goods) on the relationship between rating inconsistency, review consistency, review similarity, and review helpfulness. Therefore, considering review consistency and similarity factors when sorting online reviews can provide consumers with a variety of options.
