Food systems sustainable transition started, but some industries, such as the food processing sector, are slow to set up more sustainable food processes to release less GHG emissions. Environmental, Social, Economic and Governance (E.S.G.) criteria have been designed to rate a firm's sustainability, regardless of the industry. Although it is a non-financial criterion, investors tend to base their firms’ screening on it. Designing sustainable investment strategies in the food sector is very interesting; it could drive and urge the food systems to transition and support carbon-neutrality goals. Still, in the food industry, ESG investments showed little popularity and struggled to be developed; their effects on the financial performance (FP) remain unclear. Hence, by combining static, (LSDV) and dynamic (GMM) approaches, this study attempted to reveal and characterise the relationship between ESG scores on the FP. Plus, it looked deeply into the time horizon to represent these effects. 44 Japanese and Korean food companies constituted the dataset from 2016 to 2021. From an overall stance, the ESG scores tend to have a tangible lagged positive effect on the FP. Still, their effects are complex and vary depending on firms’ size, age and location, and the ESG score type. ESG scores can affect the FP through a U-shaped or a linear function making interpretation more difficult. Two emerging ESG behaviours: (i) a curved lagged effect following the Kuznets theories for E and S; (ii) a score interaction between contemporary and lagged values for G and aggregated ESG scores. However, industrial food activities do not matter in designing ESG-based investment strategies. Investors should thus adapt their sustainable investments based on these findings to optimise potential returns. The most important limitation of this study is the sample size, and further investigations are highly recommended with long panel data. Understanding the effective interaction of ESG-FP is a levy to direct investors and food companies towards more sustainable behaviours.
