The treatise seeks to analyze the complex of defensive networks in the Korean state of Goguryeo (BCE 37 – 668 CE) and how the respective networks functioned interactively in defense of Goguryeo territory. This will be followed by a scrutiny of Goguryeo territorial expansion and regional administration, to reveal new details regarding the Goguryeo imperial system, the ideology of Goguryeo centrality and Goguryeo national strategy. This will ultimately provide a clear picture of Goguryeo history from the perspective of archaeology. Humanity has never known true respite from war, as war bedeviled mankind ever since their emergence as a species. War has plagued human existence for eons, varying slightly mode and magnitude with time but never stopping. It is not an exaggeration to say that history of mankind can be most easily understood through the wars they fought. Warfare also laid the foundation from which arose states, kingdoms, and entire civilizations. Every state known to history was born as a result of war and conquest, and the state of Goguryeo was not an exception to the rule. Militarism and expansion that gave birth to the state of Goguryeo would remain the mainstay of its policy through its 700-year history. They were the engines that drove progress and state development from the very onset - early Goguryeo expanded its territory through conquest of small statelets in its vicinity. It was the subsequent conquest and subjugation of Buyo, a state that once dominated northern Manchuria, that allowed Goguryeo to compete with dynasties of China and nomadic empires of the steppes on an equal footing. This gave rise to notions of centrality in the Goguryeo worldview, with which Goguryeo maintained itself as a pillar of East Asian civilization. This necessarily led to the construction of numerous fortresses that functioned both as centers of military operation and local administration. Continued expansion of territory meant extension of frontlines; then further increases in the network of fortresses, size of garrisons, and numbers of men in reserve that could be mobilized in the event of war. The growing size of the regular forces and efficient organization of Goguryeo military necesitated a more sophisticated logistical apparatus including production and supply of arms and weaponry. This would not have been possible without the greater human and material resources afforded by the conquered territories. The resources from the added territories not only translated to a larger army and better capacity for its maintenance, but were also invested into construction of defensive structures, repair of critical roadways, and procurement of carts and draught animals such as horses and cattle. The dense network of fortresses and roadways became the basis for a regional administrative system that enabled governance of vast territories, as enhancement of military institutions actually led to improvement of local government. This stems from the fact that the Goguryeo state built a network of fortresses under the direct control of major metropoles such as Gungnaesong and Pyeongyang. The number of forts, gateways, and defensive walls were connected and fortified into a formidable defensive network. The networks became a blueprint for organization of new administrative districts, enabling efficient administration by civilian/military officials dispatched from the capital along with local magnates. In addition, exchange and interaction with dynasties of China permitted Goguryeo officials to acquire knowledge of advanced administrative systems. This knowledge allowed goguryeo to perfect its administrative systems, which would sustain the state for many centuries. The Goguryeo state would extend its influence beyond its immediate borders towards the later stage of its history, creating a frontier region under Goguryeo influence but more loosely administered compared to core territories under direct control. The consolidation of administrative control over the core territories meant Goguryeo was able to increase its presence in the frontier regions, and underdeveloped polities along the frontiers had no other option but to accept Goguryeo supremacy. This became the process by which Goguryeo was able to create a bona fide imperium, based on a worldview predicated on Goguryeo centrality. After China proper was unified towards late Goguryeo, the unified dynasties (Sui/Tang) would expand their control over Liaoxi, placing their borders right alongside the steppe empire of the Turks. Goguryeo became embroiled in decades-long war with these empires, which led to complete depletion of its resources and subsequent collapse. However, the Tang dynasty failed to destroy completely destroy the Goguryeo military completely, was unable to defeat Shilla in the Shilla-Tang War, and could not prevent the rise of Balhae. A close scrutiny of the military culture and system of Goguryeo constitutes an essential step towards a full understanding of the rise and fall of Goguryeo. Fortunately, a wealth of archaeological resources exist in Korea and China that provide valuable clues for revealing a complete picture of the Goguryeo military system. A careful study of existing evidence and their interpretation using the analytical tools of military archaeology is a prerequisite to gaining unqualified insight into the history of Goguryeo as an expansionistic state. This will allow us to see Goguryo not as an abstract historical entity but country that actually existed. It is hoped that this treatise will thus become the first step to researching Goguryeo through a different lens, where use of alternative methodology will lay the cornerstone for a better understanding of artifacts and resources on Goguryeo yet to be discovered.
