In a “post-truth” era, the term fake news has been weaponized and politicized political actors, delegitimizing legacy news media or discrediting political opponents’ opinions. The politicized term can potentially undermine the democratic function of news media and exacerbate polarization among citizens. Although fake news has received the wider public’s attention as a political label, scholarly attention dedicated to the subject has been comparatively lacking. To fill this gap, this study explores the characteristics of fake news discourse in the context of Korean politics and the political effects of fake news labels on news media users. This research aims to conduct in-depth analyses of fake news as a label by examining (1) definitions of the fake news term, (2) characteristics of fake news discourses, and (3) the effects of fake news labels. To this end, this study conducted a content analysis of news articles that mention the term “fake news” in major daily newspapers during the 20th presidential election in South Korea. Moreover, a survey experiment (N = 289) was conducted to test the political effects of fake news label. The results of study 1 (content analysis) indicate that the term is predominantly used as a politicized word to attack media or political opponents. The most visible actors who use fake news label are politicians, followed by legacy news outlets, whereas the targets of fake news labels are politicians, political rumors, and news outlets. Furthermore, this study confirms the ‘directionality’ of information flow between politicians and news media, which indicates that the news agenda using fake news terms set by politicians are reported by news media. Study 2 (survey experiment) was designed based on the findings from Study 1. Contrary to theoretical expectations, only the fake news label on news media significantly decreased message (news story) credibility, yet the fake news label on a message had no significant effect neither on information on messenger (news media) credibility. Furthermore, the results show a mediating relationships, that is, labeling a news outlet as fake decreases message credibility associated with trust in the news.
