Suicide risk due to Depression : based on Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data linked Cause of Death원문보기

Objectives: Depression is one of the most influential factors for suicide. However, due to the accessibility of death data, there are very few domestic studies confirming the association with actual suicide. Therefore, in this study, we tried to identify factors related to depression and suicide and the risk of suicide due to depression through mortality tracking in adults aged 19 to 80 years old. Methods: This study used the ‘Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and Cause of Death Statistics Linked Data (1.2)’, which tracked the death of respondents from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in the 4th to 6th (2007-2015) until 2019. 50,000 people were selected for the final analysis. Suicide, the dependent variable, was identified with the code X60-X84 (intentional self-harm) according to the Korean Standard Classification of Diseases(KCD-7). Depression, an independent variable, is defined as a various depression by categorizing the 'doctor's diagnosis of depression (G1)', 'experienced with depression for more than 2 weeks (G2)', and 'diagnosed depression by a doctor and experienced depression for more than 2 weeks (G3)'. For all analyzes, complex sample data was performed using SPSS (SPSS 27.0 for Window) program, and the significance level was set to 5%. Results: G1 and G3 showed a significant association with suicide. Depressed patients who received a doctor's diagnosis for depression were 5.7 times more likely to commit suicide (OR=5.74, CI: 2.92-11.30). The more doctors diagnosed depression and experienced depression for more than two consecutive weeks, the higher the tendency to commit suicide (OR=4.43, CI:1.72-11.44). G2 was not significantly related to suicide. Conclusions: There is a limitation in that the follow-up period was not considered because the diagnosis and experience of depression were not confirmed, but it is of great significance in that the association between depression and suicide was confirmed by checking the death data. Therefore, the results of this study will serve as basic epidemiologic data related to suicide in depressed patients and will serve as a basis for mediating the role of crisis intervention in depression and suicide.
