The number of accidents in the construction industry over the past five years has consistently accounted for the highest percentage of deaths in the entire industry. The government is strengthening regulations on safety management through various safety-related legislation. Several studies have been conducted to improve the current construction safety management system by applying smart technologies, and BIM and AR are being actively introduced as representative technologies. However, in the case of the railway infrastructure, the application of smart technology is tardy compared to others, which was analyzed because on-site management is being performed under spatial and temporal constraints due to railway-specific facilities such as tracks and catenary lines. Therefore, appropriate technology selection and application methodology for railway infrastructure characteristics should be presented to apply smart technology within the railway site.
This study aimed to establish AROS (Augmented Reality-based On-Site) that can be applied within the actual safety inspection process, and reflect the need for a practical perspective on field management work. In the process of establishing the system, empirical verification for field experts and technical supplementation were combined to secure practical utilization without focusing only on simple system development.
First of all, safety accidents occurring on railway bridges and tunnels were analyzed to investigate safety management vulnerabilities of high-risk construction types. After that, group interviews and surveys were conducted with field safety experts to derive the major problems. Subsequently, specific application plans of AR technology in railway construction sites were derived by mapping the technology that can solve the major safety management vulnerabilities and problems.
AROS was developed based on the derived utilization plan, which includes four technologies, such as ‘checklist provision and BIM model projection, Dimension measurement, BIM model viewer, Remote inspection’. After that, AROS was verified by field safety experts to derive technical errors to be improved to be practically introduced in the actual safety inspection work. As a result, it was necessary to supplement technologies mainly related to detection work.
A lack of stability and consistency in the projection model was observed to be a significant problem in the AROS system. To improve the projection consistency, the model weight was reduced by optimizing the simplification rate according to the shape of an object. Subsequently, quantitative evaluation of improvements was conducted, and it was verified whether the appropriate level for introduction within the actual fied safety management process was reached,
Finally, in order to secure additional practical usability of the AROS, a usability improvement and advancement plan was proposed. In the case of improving usability, a plan for developing an integrated system and a technology plan for Level of Detail (LOD) change according to the projection distance were derived. The former is a method to check and share AROS-based inspection result data in real-time. The latter is a method for the application of AROS in the field during construction. After that, an automatic comparison process between measured data and BIM models for AROS automation was established to further secure practical utilization.
Therefore, this study is significant in that it secured field applicability by deriving the needs from a practical perspective rather than simply developing functions, and by reflecting this, it developed a safety management system specialized in railway construction sites. It is also meaningful that the system has been improved to a level that can be introduced in the field safety inspection work by presenting an explicit supplementary methodology for system errors.
