A longitudinal study of heavy metals bioaccumulation in muscles of Cyprinidae in the Han River, South Korea원문보기

Fish is one of the bioindicators for tracking heavy metals; toxicity, persistence, bioaccumulation, and biomagnification are the fundamental characteristics of heavy metals. Heavy metal bioconcentration in fish is still attracting worldwide attention and is a field of ongoing research. The Han River is an extensive stream crossing Seoul, the capital of South Korea. The river serves as a drinking water source and receives treated sewage. Seoul's urban and industrialization have increased the chance of heavy metals flowing into streams. In addition, the fish kills of domestic by heavy metals continue. However, studies on the bioconcentration of heavy metals in freshwater fish living in the Han River are lacking and outdated. This study investigated the bioconcentration of copper, mercury, cadmium, lead, and chromium in Cyprinidae (common carp, crucian carp, and barrel steed), major fish types in the Han River. We monitored heavy metals in fish at designated sites in March and September every year (longitudinal study) from 2011 to 2020. This longitudinal study helped collect 180 data while limiting the effects of seasons, habitats, and fish species that could influnce bioconcentration. This research focused on the baseline concentration of heavy metals in Cyprinidae inhabiting the Han River. The baseline concentration of common carp was 0.877, 0.060, 0.003, 0.032, and 0.178 mg/kg of copper, mercury, cadmium, lead, and chromium, respectively. In addition, the concentrations in common carp were 0.730, 0.040, 0.003, 0.027, and 0.179 mg/kg, and in barbel seed were 0.747, 0.141, 0.001, 0.023, and 0.136 mg/kg, respectively. Chromium accumulated more sensitively than lead in fish muscle, and the heavy the Metal Selectivity Index (MSI) of mercury in barbel steed was 2-3 times higher than that of other fish species. Also, although there was no difference in heavy metal level according to habitat (p>0.005), significant according to fish size as the correlation coefficient between mercury concentration and length was 0.74 (p<0.001)-0.60 (p<0.01). The Suggested baseline concentration will serve as a target point for the purification of fish kills accidents by heavy metals and foundation data long-term or short-term monitoring of fish in the future.
