This dissertation describe a proposal for a deep learning-based parcel box classification algorithm to immediately classify and detect damage to parcel boxes at the logistics site.As of 2020, delivery volume in Korea was estimated at 3.37 billion boxes, it shows a rapid increase in the volume with a growth rate of 20.9% compared to the previous year. However, along with the growth of the delivery market, damage related to delivery is also increasing. In the past three years (’19-’21), 19,327 cases of consumer counseling related to delivery were received, and a total of 701 cases of damage relief were received. The main reason for the request for damage relief was the ‘damage’ to the shipment, with 47.8% being the highest. Damaged parcel boxes that reach the consumer takes more than twice as much time to go through the recovery process and reach the consumer again. In addition, there is a problem of delay in indemnification for damage due to the issue of liability, because, it is difficult to detect the time of the damage. Therefore, in this study, a system for classifying damaged parcels was studied using deep learning to prevent damaged parcels from being delivered to consumers. Deep learning technology has rapidly advanced in recent years, and various technologies such as face, voice and behavior recognition, and natural language processing are being applied to various business fields. In particular, research related on machine vision has been carried out to detect and classify abnormalities such as gangrene in fruits, defects in roads, and disease in agriculture, construction, and medical fields. As such, the research using machine vision for deep learning is in progress in various fields, and these technologies are already being applied in various industries. Therefore, the aim of this study is to propose an improved algorithm that can quickly identify and classify damaged parcel boxes by applying machine vision of deep learning to the logistics field. The scope and flow of the research in this thesis was divided into four categories as follows. First, some image classification algorithms were used to compare the performance of the classification of damaged parcel boxes. Among them, based on the classification algorithm that produces the optimal performance, a study was conducted to develop an improved classification algorithm with lightweight and high-performance. And through the analysis of related research trends, the characteristics of each algorithm were reviewed by targeting 5 main image classification algorithms. Second, the classification experiment using existing classification models was performed to classify damaged/non-damaged parcel boxes using the collected and machining image data. Among them, an optimal algorithm with high testing speed and accuracy is selected and used as a backbone for designing an improved lightweight algorithm for classifying the damage to the parcel boxes. Third, a lightweight algorithm for classifying the damage to parcel boxes was designed, and learning and testing were performed. With the results derived from the above experiment, we compared the performance of the existing classification algorithms and considered ways to improve the performance of the proposed algorithm. In addition, the performance of the proposed classification algorithm was analyzed through an experimental review. Finally, based on these research methods and experimental results, we intend to check the possibility of an improved lightweight model for classifying the damaged parcel boxes. And we suggest the direction of an algorithm in the future for detecting the damaged parcel boxes. As a result of the experiment, the two types of algorithms proposed for the classification of damaged parcel boxes showed 85.34% and 86.75% accuracy, respectively. This has been confirmed to have higher classification performance than other existing CNN classification algorithms. On the other hand, the parameter values used for network learning were analyzed to be 2-3 times larger than those of MobileNet-v2 and ShuffleNet-v2. However, it was confirmed that the proposed algorithms were more optimized to classify the damaged parcel boxes than other classification models, showing the best performance compared to speed. This confirms that the proposed algorithm can be implemented in real time by utilizing low-spec devices such as embedded devices without the use of expensive dedicated processors or equipment in real logistics sites. It was confirmed that it could be operated sufficiently in real time. This paper is a study on the classification of damaged parcel boxes, which has not been conducted before. If additional data sets are secured in the future, the performance can be further improved, and the study itself is expected to play an important role in the logistics field.
