Due to COVID-19, the world has experienced an unprecedented severance of social relationships. In such a situation, isolation of modern people is emerging as an important topic recently. The movie 'Aloners'(2021), released at a time when the number of single-person households is increasing and social isolation is intensifying, allows a serious discussion on the isolation of modern people to continue. In addition, this film can be found related to counseling in that the subject matter and development method deal with the inner human being and the process of its change. Therefore, in this study, the movie 'Aloners' was analyzed and examined from the perspective of a counseling researcher, paying attention to the 'change' of the main character. To this end, we first looked at the aspects of modern people's isolation expressed through film language such as narrative, visual expression, and context, and analyzed how it affected the lives of the characters. In addition, the results of narrative, visual, and contextual analysis were discussed in connection with the concepts and theories dealt with in counseling. In this study, among the various counseling theories, centering on the Gestalt Counseling Theory, a counseling discussion was conducted on the isolation phenomenon in movies and the isolation of modern people. The analysis results of the movie 'Aloners' are as follows. First, in the narrative analysis, the character of the movie was analyzed first. The cause of the main character Jin-ah's voluntary isolation was analyzed based on the clues revealed in the film and previous studies. As a second step, she analyzed the story and plot. By analyzing symbols that symbolize isolation and loneliness, she collected data that can be used for counseling counseling. Second, visual analysis started by analyzing images (composition of frames). We checked the dynamics and meanings according to the position of the characters in the frame. Next, the camera technique (type of shot) was analyzed. We analyzed the reasons for the use of medium close-up shots, close-up shots, and long shots used in the film, and discussed how they are connected to the theme consciousness. Finally, she analyzed the mise-en-scène in terms of space. In the second half of the play, she looked at the relationship between the meaning of the scene in which she was portrayed as out-focused and the isolation, and she discussed it in relation to the concept of Gestalt counseling. Third, context analysis was examined from the aspect of discourse among various elements constituting the context. By establishing four dimensions of voluntary/involuntary isolation and physical/emotional isolation, the connection point between social context and film was examined. As a result of the analysis, the isolation of the main character, Jin-ah, is both a voluntary isolation and a physical isolation. She confirms that on the surface she does not appear to be experiencing emotional isolation as the protagonist, but in reality she does not perceive emotional isolation and that she remains within. In addition, in the isolation of modern people, it was analyzed that emotional isolation has a greater effect on the individual than physical isolation and is difficult to solve. Based on the above analysis, the counseling discussion on the isolation of modern people was conducted by focusing on the aspect of ‘change’ in the isolation state. To this end, we first analyzed the condition of the isolated self through counseling. Jin-ah didn't sense loneliness until she went through a change and wanted to be alone. However, in reality, it was staged in the play that he was in a situation of emotional isolation. From the perspective of Gestalt counseling, the need or emotion to be resolved has not risen to the foreground, and it can be seen as an “unsolved task” remaining. When the tendency of unsolved tasks is large, it appears as a fixed gestalt, which resulted in the self to live with unresolved desires and emotions on the inside, although there is no problem on the surface. We discussed this in relation to the isolation of modern people. Second, we looked at the change from isolation in a counseling way. This self-awareness admits and accepts that she is lonely through a series of processes, which means that unsolved tasks emerge into the foreground through the process of 'Awareness' in Gestalt counseling. Jin-ah's unresolved tasks are feelings such as the desire to form human relationships and feelings of isolation. Through her awareness, she sensed that she was actually in a state of emotional isolation and confirmed that this led to a change in behavior and attitude. As Gestalt counseling emphasizes awareness as a key concept, it is meaningful in counseling that the change of the protagonist in isolation is represented by awareness. Third, the main character, who experienced only physical isolation and did not sense emotional isolation, accepted it and tried to examine the cause of change in counseling. Counseling examining what caused her to change can give implications on what points to pay attention to in modern people's isolation issues. The change of Jin-ah, who was in a state of superficial isolation, came from a strange experience she had recently had. However, it is not the intrinsic cause, and the process of 'self-acceptance' and 'self-acknowledgment' is not the essence of self-acceptance, noting that change in Gestalt counseling starts from within, and that change in Gestalt counseling is becoming 'the self as it is'. interpreted as leading to awareness. She accepts and acknowledges that she's actually feeling lonely and that she's the type of person who wants to build a relationship, who can't do anything on her own. She saw this as her self-acceptance and her self-acceptance that led her to her awareness. Finally, we looked at the psychological significance of the series of processes shown in this film. The movie 'Aloners' can find similarities with the counseling process itself in that it reveals the positive changes in the subject who are experiencing psychological difficulties. In addition, by examining the change process of the protagonist through the stage of personality change in Gestalt counseling, it was confirmed that the process can be expressed as a continuous counseling scene. In the movie, the treatment process of the main character had a lot of connection with the core concepts of Gestalt counseling enough to be seen as a self-counseling process through Gestalt counseling. Combining the above four discussions, the counseling implications of the movie 'Aloners' for modern people's isolation are as follows. Through the analysis of films and counseling discussions, it was confirmed that various types of isolation exist in our society. So far, social isolation has been discussed with a lot of weight on physical isolation and involuntary isolation among those types. However, the movie 'Aloners' presents a person in a voluntary isolation situation who is in a situation of emotional isolation but fails to detect it and chooses physical isolation on their own. Through the statistics of the previous analysis and the evaluation of movies, it was confirmed that it is a type of isolation that actually exists and can be sympathized with in our society, but it is not easy to solve because it is not revealed on the surface. The film examines how such characters change in isolation situations. In this study, the entire narrative of the film was regarded as a process of counseling. Based on the fact that the film focuses on the process of inner change of the protagonist with the subject of isolation, Gestalt counseling is connected with the counseling theory. As a result, it was concluded that the unresolved desires and emotions of the protagonist are 'unfinished business' in Gestalt counseling, and the act of sensing and bringing them to the foreground is 'Awareness'. And it was confirmed that the main character had undergone a change in herself by becoming aware through the process of ‘self-acceptance’ and ‘self-acceptance’, which are treated as core concepts in her Gestalt counseling. It should be noted that although in the film it was played in the form of her self-counseling and self-healing, it can be interpreted as the concepts and principles pursued in Gestalt counseling. Gestalt counseling will be one of the alternatives that can provide opportunities for self-acceptance and self-acceptance to modern people who are ignoring emotional isolation or are unaware of the feeling of isolation in a situation similar to that of the protagonist in the movie. The experience of self-acceptance and self-acknowledgment will eventually help the isolated client reach a state of 'Awareness', which means that their desires can be lifted into the foreground and resolved. With this in mind, counselors provide opportunities to promote awareness and contact for those in the isolation situation of the aspect dealt with in the film, and will be able to help them get out of the isolation situation by forming a holistic and cyclical gestalt on their own.
