Artificial propagation technology has been developed for mudflat crab, Chasmagnathus convexus, which has been assigned as marine protected speceis in MOF (Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries) and endangered species class 2 in ME (Ministry of Environment), inhabiting the supra-littoral zone of Jeju Island and the west and south coasts of Korea. The characteristics of growth pattern and external anatomy were analyzed in indoor rearing tanks for 12 months, and the growh pattern and environmental factors were measured for about 13 months after release of young crab in their natural habitat. The artificially propagated young crabs were revealed linear growth pattern with continuous molting at 25℃ water temperature for about 90 days, and the specific growth rates of carapace length (CL) and carapace width (CW) were 9.0 ㎛ d-1 and 9.1 ㎛ d-1, respectively. The oval shape of carapace with the taxonomic key was observed over about 1cm in carapace size. The young crabs were divided into three groups by size (CL 7.56±0.54mm in large group, CL 5.82±0.54mm in middle group, and CL 4.69±0.34mm in small group) and reared for 12 months in individual culture system at 25℃ in water temperature. So, reared young crabs were analyzed in the number of molting and growth patterns. The number of molting times with a molting rate of over 30% was recorded 5, 6, and 8 times by size group, respectively. The specific growth rates of carapace length were 1.53 ㎛ d-1, 2.09 ㎛ d-1, and 2.35 ㎛ d-1 by size group, respectively, so the smaller the individual, the higher the specific growth rate. The morphometric traits of all reared young crabs were calculated CW=1.197CL+0.069 (R2=0.990) in CL and CW, and TW=0.025e0.357CL (R2=0.917) in CL and TW. The water temperature and soil temperature of releasing area, which is a natural habatat, reflect the climatic conditions of Korea. The salinity measured in the burrow of crabs varied very from 5.6 to 31.9psu by the sampling sites, and it was very influenced by the environmental conditions (rainfall, snowfall, and flood tide, evaporation etc.) at the that time of sample. Annual mean values of water content, ignition loss, and acid volatile sulfide in sediment were revealed 17.9%, 1.20%, 2.15 mg-s kg-dry-1, respectively, that was suggested very low in organic matters. Young crabs released into their natural habitats exhibit rapid growth rates, increasing to about 5.24mm and 6.62mm in carapace length within 1 month and 2 months after releasing, respectively. The final growths of released young crab after 13 months were revealed 23.19±2.71mm in CL, 28.81±3.60mm in CW, and 13.31±4.32g, respectively. In addition, the spawning period of mud-flat crab C. convexus in Korea is considered to be early spring differed from the previously reported ones. In the future, it is necessary to investigate the survival rate and biological specificity of population by continuous monitoring of released young crabs.
