The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a post-traumatic growth Scale for college students. To compose the conceptual definition and subfactors of post-traumatic growth, this study conducted the literary review and in-depth interviews. Based on this, this study developed a post-traumatic growth inventory for college students, and then verified its reliability and validity. The validation process of the post-traumatic growth inventory for college students was composed of three steps such as basic survey, preliminary survey, and main survey as follows. First, after drawing 98 items through literary review and in-depth interviews in the basic survey, total 54 items were extracted by verifying the content validity three times with 11 experts. And after conducting the face validity with eight college students, the questionnaire for preliminary survey was developed. Second, the preliminary survey was conducted targeting total 159 college students. After deleting or modifying the items judged as unsuitable by conducting the item analysis, exploratory factor analysis, and reliability analysis, this study composed the questionnaire for main survey, including six subfactors and 40 items. Third, the main survey was conducted targeting total 648 college students enrolled in university in the whole nation. The post-traumatic growth inventory for college students was developed by excluding 12 items judged as unsuitable in the analysis process. A total of 5 sub-factors and 27 items were finally determined through exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, simultaneous validation, and reliability analysis, and standards were created. Through this study, the content could be verified as follows. First, the conceptual definition of post-traumatic growth of college students was drawn. As the subfactors of the post-traumatic growth inventory for college students, there were total five factors and 27 items such as five items about ‘Positive re-evaluation of oneself/life’, five items about ‘Self-directedness’, three items about ‘Improvement of relationship closeness’, six items about ‘Others’ responses’, and eight items about ‘Improvement of coping skills“. Second, this study developed the reliable and valid measurement instrument based on the conceptual definition of post-traumatic growth of college students. The reliability coefficient of the whole 27 items of the post-traumatic growth inventory for college students was favorable as .947. In the results of conducting the confirmatory factor analysis in the verification of validity, the whole 27 items showed CFI(.949), TLI(.942), and RMSEA(.061), which showed the favorable model fit. Third, by analyzing the correlation between the existing PTGI with verified validity and the post-traumatic growth inventory for college students developed in this study, the concurrent validity was verified. All the five subfactors of PTGI and five subfactors of post-traumatic growth of college students showed the statistically-significantly positive correlations. Fourth, considering the results of a preceding research reporting that the post-traumatic growth of college students was related to optimism as a personality trait, this study verified the relation between the post-traumatic growth inventory for college students and optimism. Optimism showed a positive correlation with the post-traumatic growth inventory for college students. Also, in order for post-traumatic growth to have the clinically-practical value, it would be necessary to examine the relation between post traumatic growth and adjustment of college students. To verify this, this study examined the correlation between the college life adjustment inventory and mental health. As a result, the five subfactors of the post-traumatic growth inventory for college students, three subfactors of mental health, and three subfactors of college life adjustment showed statistically-significantly positive correlations. This study conceptualized and measured the post-traumatic growth experienced by college students. Based on this, this study could provide changes in the paradigm of the positive perspective, beyond the pathological perspective on trauma.
