Nitrogen treatment is essential because nitrogen discharged from agriculture, sewage and wastewater causes eutrophication in water systems and acts as an environmental problem in water quality and aquatic ecosystems. ANAMMOX (Anaerobic ammonium oxidation) process, which oxidizes ammonium into nitrogen gas using nitrite as an electron acceptor, has advantages of no requirement for the supply of an organic carbon source compared to the conventional nitrification-denitrification process and low process operating costs as the energy required for aeration is greatly reduced. ANAMMOX process is cost-effective, but it has problems in producing and maintaining nitrite required as an electron acceptor and adaptability to the low growth rate of ANAMMOX microorganisms and changes in operating factors. A method using iron is one of the ways to improve these problems. It supplies nitrite necessary for the ANAMMOX reaction through FEAMMOX(Anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to Fe[III] reduction) reaction, and it has reported improved process stability with ANAMMOX microorganisms activity increased by injected iron. However, studies on the proper injection amount of iron and the contribution of nitrite substitution in this method are insufficient. Therefore, this study is to establish specific operating conditions of the ANAMMOX process using iron. For injecting magnetite during the entire operating period, the result showed 80%, 77%, and 71% of the ammonium removal efficiency at NH4+-N:NO2—-N(mol/mol) ratio = 1:1.2, 1:0.8, and 1:0.5 respectively. By injecting magnetite, the M-ANA reactor could be operated by reducing nitrite to 1/2 of the ammonium mol ratio. Compared to the existing ANAMMOX process, the injection of magnetite 50 mg/L did not show a significant difference in NH4+ removal. It demonstrated that the injection amount of nitrite can be reduced if magnetite is injected in the ANAMMOX process, and the inhibition occurred by the production and maintenance of nitrite can be minimized during the operation of the ANAMMOX process. Additionally, the contribution to the stabilization of the process was confirmed with faster start-up at the lower nitrite ratio compared to ANAMOX process. This study concluded the optimal operating factor in the ANAMMOX process using magnetite and opened the possibility of a new one-stage process that replaced the Two-stage process.
