As the fashion e-commerce market rapidly develops, tens of thousands of products are registered on the e-commerce platform every day. Individual sellers register products after setting up a product category directly on the fashion e-commerce platform. However, there are many cases in which individual sellers fail to find a suitable category for their product and register their products to the incorrect category. Precise category matching is important for increasing sales through search optimization and accurate product exposure. However, manually matching an incorrectly registered category to the correct category is time-consuming and costly for the platform managers. To resolve this problem, this study proposes a methodology for fashion e-commerce product classification based on multi-modal and transfer learning. Through the proposed methodology, three challenges in classifying fashion e-commerce products are addressed. First, the problem of extremely biased e-commerce data is resolved through using an under-sampling method. Second, multi-modal deep learning simultaneously uses data of different formats as input data for the model to solve the issue of low-quality data with noise in e-commerce data. This provides more information to the model and reduces the impact of noise. Finally, when training a deep learning model using data, such as images and text simultaneously, the requirement of significant computing resources and extensive training periods is addressed by utilizing transfer learning. In this study, three strategies for transfer learning to fine-tune image and text modules are presented. In addition, five methodologies to fuse feature vectors extracted from a single modal into one and six strategies for fine-tuning multi-modal models are presented, featuring a total of 14 strategies. By referring to these strategies, fashion e-commerce practitioners can more efficiently construct models optimized for their respective business environments.
