Confidence is hit and shattered, that's the body.
There is nothing more unique and stranger to our old world than this."
The French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy (1940-2021) described the body as unique but unfamiliar. He always faces himself, but at the same time, he begins to think about his body by saying that he is a being facing outside. Nancy also noted the fact that the body is here. He explains that the body is an existence made up of flesh and blood, and it exists by expanding outward through githal and contacting the skin of the world, and looking at the body in terms of opening and expanding. The physicality that expands in space is a symbolic action for Nancy and an extension of the rupture of existence.
Nancy first asks where our bodies are. He replies that the bodies are in labor pains in the workplace. The bodies go to work, work, or come back from work. For him, capital is the body being commoditized, transported, transported, repositioned... Therefore, capital also means the super-symbolic system of the bodies systmeme de sur-signification. … But creation is eternal. Forever. It's the creation of a gap, in the sense of the unfolding, the sea mixed with the sun, and the repulsion and rebellion of the created bodies.
In the thinking of the laboring body and creation of Nancy, we saw traces of thoughts on the body and human existence, and among them, we found walkers walking in European arcades in the late 19th century. They were people who walked on the streets, met the world through their bodies, bumped into others, and sought subjectivity through experiences. The word "walker," which means "a person who walks and thinks with subjectivity," was called a "flurneur" and had negative meanings such as "lounger" and "fl거리는neur," but was positively redefined by French poet Charles Pierre Baudelaire (1821-1867) as "an artist who walks aimlessly on the streets of the city."
Later, Walter Benjamin (1892-1940), a German humanities scholar, continued his thoughts as a subject of consumption and a walker who was also consumed as capital, saying, "We are a walker who evaluates the arcade and a product displayed on the arcade." Benjamin discovered the model of the mind of a walker with a symbolic body, which emphasized "experience, not theory or fantasy", and went on a street walk to liberate bodies and senses trapped in meaning, spirit, self, and morality, and sympathized with their writing techniques and artistic intentions. Since then, he has aimed for a new existential form in which he independently expands his world in the process of writing fragments acquired accidentally from everyday spaces through walks.
"Placedness involves the concept of passing through the body."
Since we can experience places through the body, the body and space, and the body and the empirical place are inseparable elements. With the changing trend of consumption in line with the digital era, consumers are forced to encounter more brands online. Paradoxically, however, consumers visit brands' offline spaces to experience the brand's philosophy, which is hard to feel online. In addition, as a catalyst for sharing various physical experiences and experiences in the space, brand products are worn and purchased. Through this, we can see that modern consumers think it meaningful to share experiential content with the empirical value gained, and beyond owning a brand, we can see that empirical places are changing to more and more important values for consumers. With this trend of modern society, companies have put more value on place branding that they create with consumers, inducing customer participation and sensory experiences in brand space.
The offline space of the brand creates a place where companies can directly communicate with consumers, and by showing the identity of the brand, they can build an impression of the brand to consumers. In addition, through this brand space, the social authenticity pursued by companies and brands can be expressed to consumers, expressing corporate social responsibility as a value-oriented role.
As the role of place branding became more diverse and its value increased, the offline space of the brand became one of the important factors for consumers to judge the brand and played a more important role in the relationship between the brand and the consumer.
Recently, as more and more consumers value social values that pursue sustainable public interests, not just values for individuals, many changes have occurred in consumption consciousness and flow. Consumers tended to consume brand and brand space experiences that reflect their values and identity, which created new words such as value consumption, mining out, and ethical consumption.
In addition, consumers now not only consume the brand's products, but also act as marketers independently and actively and increase their bond and value to the brand. Due to consumers who actively express their preferences, more brands and companies pursue social values and strive for ESG management and sustainable management.
Consumers with similar values internalize the brand's identity and form attachments to expand themselves into the world through the brand space. As the inner space is turned away and the outer space enters the interior, the inner and outer spaces - the spirit and the world - are transformed into each other's shapes.
Based on the previous discussion, this study found the concept and connection of walkers in that Jean-Luc Nancy considers the value of labor and creation as the basis for each other's existence, starting with thinking about Corpus, that is, the body itself. Every day, the walker continues to worry about creation at some boundary between rest and labor called "walking," and informs the world of his existence. In addition, both the Corpus and the walker that Nancy talks about actively contact the outside-skin of the body and the skin of the world, so I got the idea of place branding that uses the body to create a space experience and design a place experience. Place branding has also become important in line with the trend that values empirical value.
Therefore, this study aims to discover extended physicality based on a theoretical review of the physicality of walkers and Jean-Luc Nancy, and the purpose of this study is to derive place branding space characteristics.
This study was conducted through various literature reviews and case analysis on the Corpus of Jean-Luc Nancy, walkers, and place branding, and the flow of the study is as follows.
Chapter 1 presents the background and purpose of this study, and describes the scope and method of the study in detail. In addition, the justification and differentiation of this study are revealed by analyzing previous studies related to the subject of this study.
In Chapter 2, first, before considering walking and walkers, we open Chapter 2 with the poem "Walk" by Friedrich Wheelerlin. Afterwards, we examine the changes in the concept of walkers that began in the 19th century, starting with various literary works and literature that dealt with walks and walkers, such as Robert Balzer's book, Walter Benjamin's Arcade Project, and Walter Benjamin's Reason for City Walkers. In addition, through previous studies, it examines the experiences and existence of walkers walking on the streets as well as creative activities. Second, based on Jean-Luc Nancy's books and previous studies, he describes his discourse background on the body, and examines the meaning of the body that has changed from time to time. After that, Nancy's concept of Corpus is analyzed and his theory is expanded into the world, and the connection with the walker is described. Finally, by analyzing various art examples of bodies existing in space, expanded physicality as existence is derived.
In Chapter 3, first, literature research related to space and empirical places is preceded, and then trends in brand changes and consumer consumption in current social relations are identified. After that, following the change in branding, we examine the expansion of experiential branding from the perspective of experience and body-writing. Next, the definition and role of place branding are considered, and four spatial types are analyzed using space examples. Third, after describing its value through place branding-related literature and previous studies, the correlation with the expanded physical performance derived in Chapter 2 is systematically schematized and described through brand space examples. Finally, six place branding space characteristics are derived from the extended physicality of the walker.Chapter 4 replaces the place branding space characteristics found in Chapter 3 above with a specific analysis frame, and designates fashion brands and cosmetic brands, including sports brands that show experiential elements, to conduct case analysis. Through case analysis, it is intended to confirm which method of experience elements of the walker are added and expressed in the brand space.
Chapter 5 finally summarizes and concludes the contents of this study, along with the significance and expected effects of this study and the possibility of subsequent studies.
In the place branding spaces, which are the subject of this study, it can be seen that consumers are linked to physicality in that they engage in various experience-oriented activities, including various sensory activities. The results of analyzing the place branding space characteristics based on the extended physicality of the walker are as follows.
First, this study examined the commonalities of the two in order to find out the relationship between the walker and Jean-Luc Nancy's body, and as a result, the common answer of 'existence through the body' was found. In response, it was confirmed that the theme of body and existence was highlighted through a common method of 'labor' and 'creation' through walking. Accordingly, from the perspective of the walker, the interpretation of symbolic action, writing, being together, contact, and reason was conducted.
Second, the characteristics derived through this study are as follows. First, as the extended physicality of the walker, 'body as discontinuous continuity', 'body as non-formal anomaly', and 'body as non-routine symbolism' were derived. "Body as discontinuous continuity" is a story about the boundary between space and the body, and in sub-lingual languages, 'non-boundary' and 'double-sidedness' were derived. The 'body as an unstructured anomaly' had the potential to be filled with anything by not being full, and by not being empty, it had the potential to change the space of life through individual experiences, so 'non-hierarchy' and 'non-normality' were derived as sub-lingual languages. The 'body as an extraordinary symbolism' derived the scalability that can be felt due to extraordinary physical experiences in daily life as 'heterogeneity' and 'dynamicity'.
Since then, 'sensory stimulation through empirical sensitivity', 'overlapping sequences through continuity of scenes', and 'creative communication through symbolic differentiation' were derived as correlations to connect the expanded physicality and place branding's value approach. This helped explain the relationship with each case. Through the case where "sensory stimulation through empirical sensitivity" is often seen, the aesthetic value was immersed and appreciated, and the sensory stimulation that occurs through emotional contact occurred. Through the case where "overlapping sequences through the continuity of scenes" is often seen, the flow of the story is seen, the storytelling part of the space is read, and more imagination comes to mind. In the case of "creative communication through symbolic differentiation," the image and identity of the brand were embodied at a glance, and a relational appearance through communication was shown. Six sub-elements were found using the derived three relationships.
Finally, the place branding space characteristics combined with the extended physicality of the walker could derive 'potential of accidental encounters in wrinkles', 'tension behind the imaginary world', 'intention of peeled skin image', 'relationship orientation in a fluid atmosphere', 'creativity by internal immersion', and 'multi-layered sensory orientation'. The derived spatial characteristics are related to each of the six sub-elements derived directly above. First, the 'potential of accidental encounters in wrinkles' is a place branding space characteristic that creates a brand place through storytelling between brand space and several people experiencing the space. Second, "Tension behind the world of imagination" is a space characteristic that creates and solves narratives and stories about brand places through space expressions that constantly remind people who experience brand space. Third, 'the implication of a naked skin image' is a spatial characteristic that allows users to actively experience brand places that contain a lot of things about the brand. Fourth, 'relationship orientation in a fluid atmosphere' is a spatial characteristic that allows communication to be intentionally formed in space to create relationships. Fifth, the creativity by internal immersion allows users to immerse themselves in aesthetic values and think creatively, which is a spatial characteristic that helps users to immerse themselves deeply in the brand space. Sixth, multilayer sensory orientation is a place branding space characteristic that helps to stimulate various senses through experience in the brand space.
As a result of verifying and specifying through case analysis, it was found that the implications of the peeled skin image in the experiential place of the brand that used a lot of physicality were shown, and the relationship orientation of the fluid atmosphere was shown the least.
Through this study, there was a possibility that spatial characteristics could be derived by applying discourses using the physicality of various philosophers to the field of place branding, where empirical elements have become important. Therefore, in addition to expecting to be used as a method of place branding of brands that utilize the body, we hope that more diverse philosophers' discourse on the body will be connected to space and shown in the area of place branding.
First, this study connected the meaning of the walker to the Corpus of Jean-Luc Nangsi by interpreting it from a modern perspective, and it is meaningful to discover the spatial characteristics through it. In addition, it is meaningful that Nancy's body philosophy, which was mainly dealt with dance, was connected to design discourse, not dance. Third, it is meaningful that among the various elements of place branding, the characteristics of the body and the walker are linked with experience, and finally, by analyzing experience-oriented brand space cases, it is meaningful to discover and suggest design characteristics so that more companies can melt various experiential elements in space.
However, it remains regrettable that this study did not interpret the connection points of walkers, Jean-Luc Nancy, and place branding more deeply and tightly. This aims to increase the credibility of this study through a deeper review of each walker and a more systematic study of place branding through follow-up research. In addition, in subsequent studies, we would like to verify that the spatial characteristics derived through more diverse brand experience space cases can be applied to multiple spaces. Finally, this study is not only a theoretical consideration of walkers, Jean-Luc Nancy, experiential branding, and brand space, but also suggests the relationship and the formative language for place branding as a spatial expression, and I hope it will help the place branding research a little.
