This study examines whether there is a difference between imagination instruction conditions in changes in positive and negative future event prediction task(FEPT), behavior-related variables (motivation level, behavioral activation level, time of target behavior performance), and depression level after applying positive future simulation task(FST) repeatedly to individuals with depressive tendency. There were three different imaginary instruction conditions: Process (a process to realize positive events), Outcome (a realized outcome of positive events), and Visualization (a visual drawing of a neutral word).
An online survey was conducted on 176 undergraduate and graduate students to recruit participants for the intervention, and total 60 were randomly allocated to the three groups. The experiment period was one week: on the first day, pre-measurement, intervention (FST) and post-measurement were carried out in the laboratory; on the third, fifth, seventh day, online intervention (FST) was carried out; and finally on the eighth day, final-measurement was carried out. As a result of the study, the vividness in positive future events among FEPT increased significantly in the process group and the outcome group. The possibility of occurrence in negative future events in the process group decreased at the post-measurement and maintained the decreased pattern even at the final-measurement; However, in the outcome group, it showed a significant decrease in the post-measurement and a significant increase in the final-measurement, rebounding close to the base line. The other four FEPT variables did not show any significant difference between the groups over time. Next, in behavior-related variables, the level of motivation increased significantly only in the process group. Behavioral activation level significantly increased in all three groups, but the level was significantly higher in the process group than in the visualization group at the final-measurement. The difference between groups over time was not significant in the time of target behavior performance. Finally, the level of depression decreased significantly in all three groups, but the difference between groups over time was not significant.
The results of this study are as follows. First, it has been confirmed that process-focused simulation may be better to improve the positive and negative FEPT, and that its effect of the improvement may be maintained for a week. Second, interventions that promote positive future imagery can enhance the positive future imagery and improve the level of behavioral activation in the individuals with depressive tendency.
Based on the results above, two specific ways for applying FST to behavioral activation treatment were suggested. Finally, the limitations of this study were discussed.
