After the Industrial Revolution, the problem of fossil fuel depletion and global warming attract attention due to the continuous increase in the use of fossil fuels. In addition, problems are emerging regarding the shortage of food and energy resources and waste disposal, and many studies are looking for new solutions. Microalgae can reduce CO2 through photosynthesis and produce various energy sources such as biodiesel, ethanol, and hydrogen. Moreover, microalgae are drawing attention as a solution to industrial and environmental problems because they can remove nutrients from waste at a high level. This study aimed to solve the economic problem that indicates problems in the microalgae industry. Therefore, a method of producing high-value-added material in microalgal using industrially generated food by-products was proposed. It was intended to reduce the cost of producing microalgae through mediums using food by-products and secure the economic feasibility of biomass by producing phycocyanin, a high-value-added material. Phycocyanin is a kind of photosynthetic pigment with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer capabilities and can potentially use in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Therefore, a method of producing high-value-added material in microalgae using industrially generated food by-products was proposed. To this end, the chemical composition of various food by-products was checked in Chapter 2, where microalgae were grown possibly, and the optimal strain was selected. As a result, the tangerine peel was selected as the most possible food by-product, and Galdieria Sulphuraria CCMEE 5587.1 was chosen as the optimal strain. After that, in chapter 3, the extraction method of phycocyanin from microalgal biomass was confirmed. In addition, to increase the productivity of phycocyanin, the effect of glucose and initial cell concentration on phycocyanin productivity was checked. It was checked that the use of bead-beating to extract microalgae was most reasonable and the presence of glucose positively affected the productivity of phycocyanin. In addition, it was confirmed that when the concentration of initial cells was 1 g/L, the highest phycocyanin productivity was obtained. Subsequently, in chapter 4, I optimized the pH and N:P ratio to prepare a tangerine peel medium for enhanced phycocyanin production. In addition, seed culture conditions were chosen to maximize phycocyanin yield, and a new culture strategy was suggested. This study confirmed that microalgae could be cultured, and new value-added products could be produced using food by-products with low industrial value. As a result, biomass productivity was up to 6.37 times higher than conventional medium, phycocyanin productivity was enhanced up to 2.8 times, and efficient culture strategies could be confirmed. This study would help to reduce the cost of producing microalgae and to increase the economic feasibility of the microalgae industry through the production of high-value-added materials. I am sure that this study will be a clue for building a sustainable and carbon-neutral society for our society.
