Korea and China belong to the East Asian cultural circle, and their cultural relations are close. The two countries have deep origins in the integration of lacquer culture. Mother of pearl lacquerware is a representative product of the lacquer art of the two countries and an important carrier of cultural exchanges between the two countries. The mother of pearl lacquerware of the two countries learned from each other and interacted with each other, with similarities and differences. Previously, China and South Korea had been studying mother of pearl lacquerware from their respective perspectives, and there was a tendency to neglect the cultural exchange between South Korea and China. Although there are few remains of mother of pearl lacquerware in Korea, a detailed study has been carried out. In addition, the study of mother of pearl lacquerware in the Korean era was also very active. However, there are few studies on the origin of mother of pearl lacquerware in most studies. A comparative study on the origin of mother of pearl lacquerware before the Tang(唐) and Song(宋) Dynasties and the Ming(明) and Qing(清) dynasties after the Yuan(元) Dynasty is needed. There have been few papers on the study of mother of pearl lacquerware in China before, but there are many Ming and Qing cultural relics, which should be paid attention to by the academic community in the future. In this regard, this paper, by sorting out historical documents, investigates unearthed or preserved cultural relics, compares mother of pearl lacquerware between the two countries, reveals their differences in style, and discusses the cultural tendencies of the two countries. First, we hope to make extensive use of the original historical materials of South Korea and China. At the same time, official historical documents, local chronicles and personal writings are used. By means of literature comparison and textual research, the data of China and South Korea are compared to ensure the accuracy of historical data. Second, investigate and analyze the Korean Chinese mother of pearl lacquerware relics collected in the museum. Third, understand the materials and technology of Korean and Chinese mother of pearl lacquerware. What's more, so far, the research on Korean and Chinese mother of pearl lacquerware has not paid attention to its origin. Therefore, this paper attempts to find out the origin of Chinese mother of pearl lacquerware before the Tang and Song dynasties, and also attempts to make a comparative study on the stylized remains of Korean and Chinese mother of pearl lacquerware in the Ming and Qing dynasties after the Yuan Dynasty. In addition, combining the historical documents of the two countries, we try to sort out the situation of tribute(纳贡) and trade. To some extent, this reflects the reverse import of South Korea's mother of pearl lacquerware to China, emphasizing the two-way nature of bilateral exchanges. Therefore, this paper draws the following conclusions by referring to the literature of China and South Korea at the same time. In China, the origin of mother of pearl occurred in an earlier period. The "Shen-Qi(蜃器)" in the Shang(商) and Zhou(周) Dynasties mean the materials of mother of pearl, but this is regarded as the origin of mother of pearl lacquerware. A large number of words about "Dian(鈿)" appeared in the historical materials of Uni President Silla and the documents of the Tang Dynasty. In the Tang Dynasty, artifacts such as "Dian(鈿) mirror", "Bao-Dian(寶鈿)mirror", "Bao-Dian(寶鈿)","Dian-Bei(䥖貝)mirror", "Bao-Zhuang(寶裝)", and "Bao-Dian(寶鈿)Belt" were added to the literature. The "Bao-dian(寶鈿)" shown in these records used advanced materials including shells. It laid a foundation for the development of mother of pearl lacquerware. It is worth mentioning that Todai-ji(東大寺) in Japan recorded the "National Treasure Account(國家珍寶帳)" of the Tang Dynasty, which is the earliest documentary record to clearly record the name of "Luodian(螺鈿)". the Korean era, mother of pearl lacquer technology has been developed. ‘The illustrated book of the xuan hereign envoy to korea’(宣和奉使 高麗圖經), written in 1123 by Xu Jing(徐兢), an envoy of the Song Dynasty of China, recorded that "the mother of pearl lacquerware produced by Korea is very exquisite." In addition to paying tribute to China, the Korean Dynasty also frequently used mother of pearl lacquerware in bilateral trade. During the Song and Yuan Dynasties, the word "Luo Zhuan" began to appear in a large number in various works and collections. In the Song Dynasty, mother of pearl lacquerware broke away from daily artifacts and expanded to interior decoration. At that time, the use class of mother of pearl lacquerware was not only royal or aristocratic, but also a commodity in the market. In addition, according to the Korean Royal Rites in the late Korean period, mother of pearl lacquerware was used in both wedding and funeral ceremonies. Not only did the Korean Dynasty pay tribute to China's mother of pearl lacquerware, but it was also a part of the Korean Dynasty's trade with China and Japan at that time, and it was also used by the royal family as a gift to the emperor and ministers. During the same period, China not only recorded the mother of pearl lacquerware in historical materials such as "Ming sillok(明實錄)" and "Qing sillok(清實錄)", but also produced famous masters of mother of pearl lacquerware. These artisans of mother of pearl were recorded in various personal writings and other documents, reflecting the prosperity of mother of pearl craft at that time. For the two countries' mother of pearl lacquerware relics, this paper collected a number of excellent mother of pearl lacquerware works with unique decorative patterns and technological characteristics, which can highlight the production area and the level of craftsmanship at that time. For example, in the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, the mother of pearl lacquerware was the "colored phoenix pattern mother of pearl lacquer carving(彩繪獸鳳鳥紋螺鈿漆罍) " unearthed from the Liulihe(琉璃河) site in Beijing, which was the pioneer of mother of pearl craft. It is fully proved that it began in the Western Zhou Dynasty. ‘Mother of pearl Baoxiang-hua bronze mirror(螺鈿寶相花銅鏡)’ in the Tongil Silla sidae(統一新羅時期) Period collected by Huyan Art Museum and ‘Mother of pearl Tuan-hua bronze mirror(螺鈿團花銅鏡)’ collected by shoso-in(正倉院) of Japan are all flat mother of pearl lacquerware. There are many similarities between mother of pearl lacquerware of the two countries. The difference lies in the abundance of mother of pearl patterns in the Tang Dynasty. Compared with the 'Guanghan-gong Black Lacquer najeon(廣寒宮黑漆螺鈿殘片)' unearthed at the Capital Site of the Yuan Dynasty in Beijing, the Goryeo period 'Najeon Hawksbill gukhwa gyeongjeonham(螺鈿玳瑁菊花紋經函)' collected by the National Museum in Tokyo shows that the Goryeo period mother of pearl lacquerware is mainly designed with Buddhist tools, simple and abstract, but the Song and Yuan period mother of pearl lacquerware drawings are complex and picturesque. The design of the 'najeon gukhwa gyeongjeonham(螺鈿菊花紋函)' in the Joseon period collected by the Tokyo National Museum is more concise than that in the Goryeo period. In contrast, the Wanli(萬曆) 'black lacquer painted gold najeon yongmun box(黑漆描金螺鈿龍紋箱)' in the Ming Dynasty of China used a combination of various lacquer techniques. Due to close exchanges and mutual cultural influence between the two countries, mother of pearl lacquerware has many similarities in decoration techniques, patterns and patterns. Both of them originated from the East Asian cultural circle, but their materials, production styles and expression methods are different. This article introduces the differences between mother of pearl in the two countries from three aspects: mother of pearl materials, mother of pearl technology, and pattern decoration, hoping to provide theoretical support for the distinction between mother of pearl in the two countries. The materials of mother of pearl lacquerware in Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty are jeonbokpea(全鰒貝). Other materials will appear only after the Japanese imperialist occupation period. China uses yagwangpae(夜光貝) as its material. Haliotis discus have not been used in Chinese mother of pearl lacquerware. After the middle of the Qing Dynasty, jinjupae(眞珠貝) began to appear. Most jinjupae come from Leizhou Peninsula(雷州半島). During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Chinese folk mother of pearl also often used freshwater shells(淡水貝). The Korean craftsmen used the crack method(龜裂法), which was determined by the material properties of Haliotis discus. This kind of patterns and patterns that formed cracks became a unique feature of mother of pearl lacquerware in the Joseon period. On the contrary, China uses Turbo marmoratus, and there is no need to use the crack method. In the Korean era, mother of pearl lacquerware often used the kkeuneumjil method to decorate long curved patterns such as flower stems and landscape patterns. However, Chinese mother of pearl lacquerware mostly uses Turbo marmoratus, so from the perspective of material properties, mother of pearl can be cut into long curves, so it does not need to be cut. Both countries use metal wire at the edge of the objects to reinforce them. However, in the patterns of mother of pearl lacquerware in the Korean era and the early Korean period, the flower stems are also expressed with metal lines. This technique is unique to mother of pearl in South Korea. In Korean and Korean times, mother of pearl lacquerware was decorated with ‘hwadangchomun(唐草紋)', with ‘yeonhwa(蓮花) hwadangchomun' and ‘moran(牡丹) hwadangchomun' as the main patterns. Sometimes the pattern decoration was spread on the whole surface, and sometimes the expanded pattern decoration was used separately. In China at the same time, 'hwadangchomun' was also a very common decorative technique of mother of pearl, but it was rarely used as the main pattern, and more often used as the auxiliary pattern. It usually appears at the edge of mother of pearl and outside the light opening area, in the accessory pattern decoration of the main pattern decoration. As the cultures of the two countries blend and are closely linked, the patterns of mother of pearl lacquerware have both similarities and impetus. Sansumun(山水紋), Sehansamu(歲寒三友紋), Sipjangsaengmun(十長生紋), etc. are commonly used decorative patterns of mother of pearl lacquerware in South Korea and China. Plum blossom, pine tree, bamboo, peony, lotus and other flower and plant elements; Animal tattoos such as yong(龍), bosanhwang(鳳凰), crane, hojakmun(虎鵲紋), rabbit are also used by both countries. But there are many differences in the way of expression. On the whole, the Korean pattern is a more abstract and flat illustration. Chinese patterns are more painterly, emphasizing the realism of patterns and the three-dimensional sense of making patterns. The integration of Korean and Chinese mother of pearl lacquerware from ancient to modern times complements each other. Through various phenomena, we can easily find that in the process of exchanging what we need, the lacquerware technologies of the two countries are integrated and closely linked. It plays an important role in the historical evolution of mother of pearl lacquerware in both countries. Both originated from the East Asian cultural circle, but their production styles and expression methods are different. As there were many gaps in the study of mother of pearl in the Ming and Qing Dynasties in China during the same period, the study of their relationship may have limitations. This paper attempts to further organize the historical records of mother of pearl lacquerware between the two countries, explore the relationship between mother of pearl lacquerware and tribute, trade and diplomacy, and fill the gap in the study of the two countries. To compare the differences between the two countries' mother of pearl lacquerware in terms of craftsmanship, shape, pattern, etc, in order to analyze the similarities and differences between the two countries and distinguish them, so as to solve the problem of confusion between countries in the past. Therefore, this paper focuses on improving the research from the perspective of the characteristics of the two countries' mother of pearl crafts and artistic styles, and makes a better interpretation of the two countries' mother of pearl by comparing the South Korean mother of pearl at the same time and analyzing their similarities and differences.
