The purpose of this study is to compare biomechanical properties of canine cruciate ligaments stabilized with three intra-articular repair techniques. Twenty-one hindlimbs were obtained from 12 euthanized small-to-medium cadavers (8.1 – 9.3 kg) and were randomly classified into three groups. In group 1 (n = 7), the cranial cruciate ligament rupture was stabilized with the indirect fixation method, using an anchor and tenodesis screw. Group 2 (n = 7) underwent direct fixation methods using two strands of #2 Fiberwire®, one button, and one toggle pin. Group 3 (n = 7) was fixed using two pairs of one strand of #2 Fiberwire® with a button and a toggle pin. Samples were then fixed to prepared wooden boards and acrylics. The stifle was positioned at 135° flexion. Incremental compression force was applied, and load at each specific displacement (3mm, 10mm) and maximum failure load were recorded. In the 3 mm displacement results, Group 1 and 2, Group 1 and 3 showed significant differences (p< 0.05). In the 10 mm displacement results, Group 1 and 2, Group 1 and 3 showed significant differences (p< 0.05). In the maximum failure load, Group 1 and 2, Group 1 and 3 showed significant differences (p< 0.05). The indirect stabilization methods were more robust than the direct stabilization method. The indirect intra-articular techniques could be an effective surgical method for cranial cruciate ligament rupture.
