ABSTRACT
An Analytical Study on Rondo K.485 by W. A. Mozart

This thesis analyzes Mozart’s Rondo in D Major, K. 485. Born in Salzburg, Austria, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) was considered a principal musical genius of the classical era, along with Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) and Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). He composed more than 700 pieces in various lengths and genres. Mozart’s Rondo works were all composed in his later years and encompassed three pieces; K. 485, K. 494, and K. 511.
In this thesis, Mozart’s Rondo K.485 and ‘Thematisch-Motivisch Arbeit’were researched. Also, the monothematic sonata form and meaning of rondo, whose theme is repeated several times were examined through the analysis of this work. The study’s results are as follows.
First, the rhythm of theme motivation is reduced and expanded through ‘Thematisch-motivische Arbeit’. Second, the melody of the first theme and the second theme is same which shows the unity of composition in the monothematic sonata form.
I hope this thesis contributes to further studies and help performers have a better understanding of Mozart’s Rondo K.485.
