In this paper, with the spread of interest in realization of carbon neutral and RE100, a study on designing large-scale bifacial Floating PVs (Photovoltaic system) for maximum power generation under limited area was conducted. In PV power plants with conventional monofacial PV modules, PV modules would be installed southward for maximum efficiency. PV modules have the disadvantage of power loss due to shading, so sufficient separation distance between PV arrays should be ensured. Accordingly, to optimize the efficiency of the PV power plant, the area required to arrange the PV modules increases. However, if PV modules are installed in both directions in the east and west in parallel instead of the south-facing installation method, the required area for PV power plant could be reduced. Since the conventional PV modules absorb light only through the front surface, the efficiency is low when installed in the east and west directions. On the other hand, since bifacial PV modules could absorb light not only from the front but also from the rear, a large amount of power could be expected from the front before noon when installing it in the east direction and relatively large amount of power could be expected after noon by absorbing form the rear compared to monofacial PV module. On the contrary, when bifacial PV modules are installed facing west, a large amount of power could be expected from the rear after noon, and relatively large amount of power could be expected before noon by absorbing form the rear compared to monofacial PV module. Bifacial PV modules could produce relatively more power generation than that of conventional monofacial PV module in a low irradiation environment with less direct light, such as right after sunrise, just before sunset, and shading, etc. Taking these advantages, a designing of parallel installation of bifacial PV module facing east and west directions was proposed to maximize power generation under limited area. Chapter 1 of this paper describes the background, purpose, method, and scope of the study on the designing large-scale bifacial Floating PVs with maximum power under limited area. Chapter 2 describes the principle of PV power generation and the characteristics of bifacial PV power generation. Since PV power generation uses a photoelectric effect, the principle that electrons are generated when absorbing lights with a certain energy, research on methods that could absorb a lot of light and reduce losses are important to improve the efficiency of PV power generation. Accordingly, the technologies of manufacturing solar cells and PV modules to improve light absorption and to reduce the loss were introduced. In addition, the principle, manufacturing process, and strength of bifacial PV module compared to the conventional PV module are described. Chapter 3 describes development trends, components, and design elements of Floating PVs. Floating PVs are systems that generate power by installing PV modules with buoyancy body on an idle water surface. Floating PVs could efficiently use the land area and shows relatively high efficiency compared to on-land PVs thanks to cooling effect by water surface, and supply is expanding worldwide. Unlike on-land PV, Floating PV is installed on the water surface, so it is necessary to consider the method of selecting and installing equipment suitable for the installation environment, so an introduction to this is described. In addition, it was introduced for design elements such as the installation tilt angle, azimuth, separation distance between PV arrays. Chapter 4 describes the prediction of the power for bifacial Floating PVs. To review the effectiveness of the proposed installation method, the equation of bifacial PV power according to installation method was modeled. In a PV power system, the output is changed by incident light perpendicular to the surface of inclined PV modules. In other words, since irradiation must be predicted to predict the output of the PV module, the prediction model for tilted irradiation according to the positional relation between the sun and the earth and the installation method of PV modules was introduced. In addition, the light affecting the output of the bifacial PV module was divided into front light and rear light, and the power prediction of bifacial PV module was modeled. The rear light was divided into direct light reflected from the floor surface where the PV module was installed and scattered light in the atmosphere and modeled using a View factor. The power of the bifacial PV module installed in the east and west directions was modeled through the relationship between the change in the sun’s azimuth over time and the installation azimuth of the PV module. In Chapter 5, the output characteristics by irradiation installation tilt angle, and separation distance for each installation method were compared, and the power prediction model of Chapter 4 was verified. Outdoor experiments confirmed the advantage of the proposed installation method under low irradiation conditions, and the daily power was predicted at an error rate of 0.63-13.65[%], and the daily power based on the measured irradiation of the facing east and west was predicted at an error rate of 0.11-7.28[%]. Chapter 6 analyzes the design of large-scale bifacial Floating PVs and the economic feasibility, considering the estimated power generation, total investment, and operating costs based on the area required for installation of 100 [MW]. Comparing the arrangement of PV modules considering the separation distances between PV module arrays for the installation methods, the installable capacity of Bi-EW under the required area for 100 [MW] Floating PVs with PV modules facing south was calculated to be 22 to 40[%] higher depending on the tilt angle of the PV module (15 to 30[°]). Compared with the conventional Mono-S installation method with Bi-EW, the expected annual power generation density obtained using the installable capacity and power prediction model was calculated to be at 79,151.63 to 99,067.28 [MWh/㎢] with a tilt angle of 15[°] and 74,503.00 to 101,212.20 [MWh/㎢] with a tilt angle of 30[°], showing that the power density was 25.16 to 35.85[%] higher. In addition, considering the expected amount of power generation by installation method and the total investment cost, it was confirmed that Floating PVs with the Bi-EW installation method had the highest total investment cost, but the highest IRR, DSCR, NPV and the lowest LCOE, showing it was economical. It is expected that this study would contribute to the increase of renewable energy generation and the improvement of the economic feasibility of Floating PVs by proposing a design method that generates maximum power under limited area. In addition, it is expected that the proposed installation method would contribute to the stable operation of the power grid by lowering the power peak near noon and increasing the power generation in the low irradiation range.
