In this study, three different saccharides(glucose, β-cyclodextrin, kraft pulp) were hydrothermally carbonized for the synthesis of hydrochar with excellent adsorption capacity, and their adsorption behaviors were studied. The morphology and chemical structure of hydrochar were greatly influenced by the type of precursors. The macropores and negatively charged surface of glucose-based hydrochar were beneficial for organic pollutants adsorption. The methylene blue was adsorbed on the hydrochar surface monolayerly via chemisorption. The macropores contributed to intra-particle diffusion and improved the adsorption capacity of hydrochar.
A hydrochar-enveloped cellulose nanofiber membrane was successfully prepared via facile in-situ hydrothermal carbonization for water treatment. The prepared membrane showed the pure water flux of 52.65 L·m-2·h-1 ·bar-1 for 12 hours without a critical flux drop during the membrane fabrication. The hydrochar was chemically bonded with cellulose nanofiber and improved the durability of the membrane. Due to the electrostatic interaction and intra-particle diffusion between hydrochar and cationic contaminants, the membrane showed excellent rejection rate, selectivity, and reusability. This study provided a successful strategy for the preparation of all-carbohydrate-based high-performance water treatment membrane.
