Recently, a lot of efforts have been made to reduce the energy consumption of buildings through systems like the certification of building energy efficiency grades and the certification of zero energy buildings. To maintain efficient energy consumption for buildings, analyzing the factors of energy usage and predicting energy usage and carbon emissions of the buildings is a priority. Following this, energy interpretation for buildings becomes essential. Many studies used BIM which can contain all the information generated during the entire life cycle of a building. However, a lack of information on energy analysis and compatibility with energy analyzing programs and the difficulty in using weather data have made it not completely feasible in the real world. Hence, a platform for energy analysis and management has been increasingly required, which can conduct an energy analysis of buildings, establish plans for efficient energy management, and make schedules through the collection and linkage of various information. By using the digital twin technology, energy analysis can be performed by collecting and linking various data necessary for energy analysis of buildings, and effectively visualized data and hence enhanced energy management can be obtained, because we can establish a plan for efficient energy usage for the buildings thanks to the data. So, the purpose of the current study is to present a framework to provide building energy analysis services using BIM-based digital twins. The main contents of the present study are as follows. First, the necessity of analyzing building energy using digital twins is derived through research on the literature on digital twin-based building energy analysis and methods mainly used for the analysis of existing building energy. Second, the use of BIM information in existing digital twin systems is investigated, prior studies related to energy analysis of digital twin-based buildings and domestic and international status are analyzed, remaining problems in existing cases are derived, and improving directions are presented. Third, to collect data necessary for the framework, the structures of the EnergyPlus input files, namely EPW files (weather data) and IDF files (building data for building energy analysis) are analyzed. Then the EPW files and IDF files are matched with the Korea Meteorological Administration public data and BIM (IFC) data. Fourth, Propose a framework for implementing the analyzing services for the energy of the buildings that can be linked to the various data using digital twin based on a game engine. Fifth, to verify the validity and practicality, the framework presented in the study applies to actual cases. Moreover, ideas for the limitations of the study and future research directions are presented. The framework presented in the current study allows for urban building energy management using the digital twin platform. It is expected to drive to realize energy management and energy reduction through real-time simulation and monitoring of digital twins. However, there are limitations in building HVAC systems or components that can be used by energy analysis programs based on BIM. In order to upgrade building energy analysis services using BIM-based digital twins, Future research should focus on converting the HVAC system of buildings into energy analysis models automatically.
