As bread consumption increased due to changes in dietary habits and the increase in single-person households, the market size of bakeries that make bread or bake pre-made dough grew 4.1% annually from 3.7 trillion won in 2015 to 4.4 trillion won in 2019. (https://www.kbfg.com) With the growth of the bakery industry, the demand for professional manpower with systematic and professional knowledge and skills is increasing, and the number of people who want to get a job at a bakery company is increasing, but in proportion, the job shortage and turnover are also increasing.
In the case of workers in the bakery industry, they often develop their skills and choose a job in consideration of their career (Lee and Park, 2016). In other words, it is desirable for bakery industry workers to be approached from an expert perspective in terms of creating new things and developing products that reflect customer needs rather than just workers for a living (Lee, 2015). This suggests that bakery workers manage and develop their careers based on their self-directed and value-oriented career attitudes. College students majoring in baking and pastry who are in the position of entering society should also start career management to increase their employment potential by setting their own career development goals and preparing action plans to achieve their goals in a rapidly changing career development environment. In addition, it is necessary to study the relationship between various career-related variables to recognize the career management problems or importance that arise after employment in a rapidly changing career environment.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify and structurally verify the influence relationship of college students majoring in baking and pastry on protean career attitude, self-leadership, self-directed learning ability, and employability.
For this purpose, a Naver online survey was conducted on 300 college students majoring in baking and pastry at Busan-based colleges and universities from September 1 to September 15, 2022, and a total of 268 copies were selected as the final analysis target. The data collected in this way were analyzed using SPSS 24.0 and AMOS 24.0 statistical programs.
The results of this study are summarized as follows.
First, it was found that the self-direction of the protean career attitude had a positive (+) effect on the behavior-centered strategy, natural compensation strategy, and constructive thinking strategy of self-leadership. It was found that the value orientation of the protean career attitude had a positive (+) effect on the of self-leadership's natural compensation strategy, constructive thinking strategy.
Second, it was found that the value orientation of the protean career attitude had a positive (+) effect on the self-directed learning ability.
Third, it was found that the self-direction of the protean career attitude had a positive (+) effect on the job search skills and job search responsiveness of employability. It was found that the value orientationof the protean career attitude had a positive (+) effect on the job search responsiveness of employability.
Fourth, it was found that self-leadership's behavior-oriented strategy, natural compensation strategy, and constructive thinking strategy had a positive (+) effect on self-directed learning ability.
Fifth, it was found that self-leadership's constructive thinking strategy had a positive (+) effect on job search technology and job search response ability of employability. It was found that self-leadership's natural compensation strategy had a positive (+) effect on job search response ability of employability.
Sixth, it was found that self-directed learning ability had a positive (+) effect on job search technology and job search response ability of employability.
Seventh, as a result of analyzing the difference between job-related certificates through further analysis, it was found that there were significant differences in protean career attitude, self-leadership, self-directed learning ability, and employability. The academic implications of the results of this study are as follows.
First, previous studies have conducted research on bakery workers or have been conducted mainly on college students majoring in culinary arts, so research on college students majoring in baking and pastry is insufficient. A study was conducted on college students majoring in baking and pastry, which is increasing with the growth of the bakery industry.
Second, the study was conducted from the perspective of career development by considering college students majoring in baking and pastry as prospective professionals rather than career education. The research was conducted by expanding the scope of the protean career attitude research, which was mainly used as a research topic for office workers, to college students majoring in baking and pastry.
The practical implications of this study are as follows.
They suggest that to increase the employability of college students by empirically confirming the effect of career attitudes on self-leadership, self-directed learning ability, and employability of college students majoring in baking and pastry, they should be able to manage their own careers. In the current unstable labor market, where one must develop one's own career and competency, the protean career attitude is a key competency necessary for individuals who must cope with the new environment and choose their jobs, careers, and jobs. An educational program that can enhance the protean career attitude will help college students majoring in baking and pastry recognize the concept of career experience and build a foundation for efficiently managing their careers even after entering society.
The limitations and future research directions of this study are as follows.
