Lettuce contains high level of minerals and vitamins, not only
helps to prevent anemia and osteoporosis, but also helps to
stabilize nerves and relieve pain. Currently, cultivation of lettuce is
primarily focused on hydroponic cultivation, environmental
management in controlled facilities and culture medium
development. There are relatively many studies on the development
of culture medium, but no examples using ionite, a type of mineral.
In this study, the effect of ionite treatment on the growth and the
freshness of lettuce during hydroponic cultivation was investigated
for the purpose of developing environment-friendly culture medium
with utilization of ionite. The results are as follows:
To investigate the effect of ionite on the growth of lettuce during
hydroponic cultivation, plant height was measured after culture
medium cultivation for 5 weeks. On the other hand, plant height,
fresh weight, leaf width and leaf length were investigated three
times at intervals of 5 days after the first harvest. As a result, it
was confirmed that lettuce cultivated on the culture medium
containing ionite compared to the culture medium with growth
promoters showed a clear improvement in growth of plant height
and fresh weight, and similar tendencies were found in leaf length
and leaf width.
The lettuce group grown on the culture medium supplemented
with ionite showed a large amount of iron compared to the control
group, and this greater containment is believed to be due to the
iron in ionite.
When the lettuce was cultivated in a culture medium, the first
harvest was performed after 22 days. And then the freshness was
measured every other day for 9 days after the lettuce was
separated from the main body for 5 days after grown. As a result,
it was found that the experimental group using ionite and the
control group were similar in terms of moisture, color, pH and
chlorophyll.
As a result of analyzing the nutrient solution containing ionite,
after passed through cultivation bed for the first time, the pH and
dissolved oxygen (DO) content increased slightly compared to the
nutrient solution containing the growth promoter, but the
suspended solids, BOD, COD, phosphorus, and nitrogen amounts
were decreased. In particular, compared to the control group, BOD
and COD showed a large reduction rate in the nutrient medium in
which lettuce was grown for the first round with the addition of
ionite, and the amount of DO showed a tendency to increase.
As described above, ionite added to the nutrient solution is not
only effective for the growth of lettuce, but is also expected to be
an eco-friendly nutrient solution to replace growth promoters.
