This study focuses on the engineering properties of rapid hardening composite mats, which improves the initial hardening performance of geosynthetic concrete composite mat (GCCM). Methods to apply rapid hardening composite mats at railroad sites are recommended by experimentally analyzing the properties. GCCMs are typically produced by combining a dry mortar containing hydraulic cement with two geotextiles for slope strengthening, earthwork drainage, and embankment lining weed control. As a construction technique, GCCMs are installed and attached to a reinforcing facility, and then hardened by spraying water. A representative example of GCCM is a concrete canvas developed in the UK in 2007, which was introduced in Korea in late 2010. Currently, various types of GCCM are being developed and supplied. GCCMs may be utilized on slopes as an alternative to shotcrete, providing structural benefits such as securing the tensile strength of geotextiles, compressive strength of binders, and flexural rigidity of structures. GCCMs have many advantages, such as excellent applicability to slopes where vegetation growth is difficult due to poor soil conditions and ability to block the infiltration of rainfall. Thus, they are considered an excellent method for constructing new structures in other countries. However, GCCMs are difficult to use in South Korea due to the lack of economic feasibility compared to alternative techniques. They may be applied to new structures, but have a limitation in applications needing urgency because the curing speed is comparable to that of general mortar. As a result, a rapid hardening composite mat with increased early curing performance for use in railroads operating in South Korea and in emergency situations has been created, and its performance need to be analyzed in detail. The railroad sites in operation and other sites that require urgent response were analyzed as sites suffering roadbed loss owing to heavy rains, soft slope protection sites, and sites with drainage damage along the track drainage such as plume pipes. In these sites, initial compressive uniaxial strength, bending stiffness, tensile strength, and durability were considered important factors. Therefore, an experimental study based on the required performance of the rapid hardening composite mat was performed. A test construction was performed in the field experiment of the rapid hardening composite mat to apply it to the slope of a railroad in operation, and the deformation of the rapid hardening composite mat was examined through various measurements. On the slope of the railroad in operation, 150 m could be built in three hours, proving the high-speed construction. However, the deformation of the rapid hardening composite mat due to fast curing needed improvement. In addition to slope protection at sites with slope loss (weakness), the applications of the rapid hardening composite mat at the railroad sites were analyzed as maintenance inspection passage fence, tunnel entry and exit, covers for suppressing weeds, such as bell-mouth sections, railroad crossing sewage inlet/outlet loss prevention cover, earthworks along the railroad, drainage protection work, and railroad underground cable protection cover. Thus, GCCMs may be employed in a number of ways for the protection and maintenance of railroad infrastructure. The engineering performance of the rapid hardening composite mat examined in this study was found to be appropriate for urgent sites. However, the deformation owing to the rapid early hardening needs to be addressed by conducting research on construction techniques.
