The power amplifiers (PAs) are the key component in the radio frequency (RF) front-end, which amplify the weak RF signal to a strong version before transmitting out of the antenna. The class-E PAs are the switch-mode amplifier where the active device operates as a switch with two states ON-OFF during the signal cycle, and the load network exhibits an inductive passive impedance with a resonant circuit. Proceeding from these characteristics, drain efficiency can be achieved theoretically up to 100 %. However, the conventional analysis and design are targeted for single frequency or narrow band operation. This thesis will present a novel methodology for realizing a broadband class-E PA in a single-stage configuration. The proposed PA features high drain efficiency and power added efficiency (PAE) over a wide bandwidth. For efficient broadband operation, it is required for the load network to satisfy both fundamental and harmonic matching requirements. First, the matching design method at the fundamental is based on non-Foster matching principle which is in contrast to the establishment of Foster about the positive slope of the passive reactance with frequency and can overcome the gain-bandwidth limitation of the conventional matching network yielding optimal drain efficiency within an overall bandwidth. A negative group delay (NGD ) structure with passive elements-based implementation is adopted to exhibit the required non-Foster characteristic and acts a matching network at the fundamental frequencies. Second, a synthesized low-pass matching network is additionally utilized which provides not only real-to-real impedance transformation to the 50 Ω load, but also the proper harmonic suppression as required in the class-E harmonic manipulation. Further analysis and design procedure for final realization with distributed components are presented in detail. A PA prototype using a GaN HEMT transistor CGH40006P (5 W) with target operating bandwidth from 2.0 GHz to 2.9 GHz is designed, fabricated and measured for verification. The experimental results shows that the PA exhibits efficiency of above 69 % across the target bandwidth while output power is remained in a range of 37-39 dBm, corresponding to gain of 12-14 dB. Also, a high average efficiency is recorded with around 74 % which is remarkable as compared to the other state-of-the-art PAs. Moreover, the second and third harmonics are below -50 dBc which confirms an efficient harmonic suppression mechanism in this design. The overall size of the PA is about 80 mm × 50 mm.
