An effects analysis of emerging last-mile delivery system in urban area: utilizing gas stations as collection points원문보기

With the exponential growth of the e-commerce market, the last-mile delivery market is experiencing a significant turning point. In order to adapt to this rapidly changing market and provide rational directions, preparations need to be made. Last-mile delivery is a crucial stage in the overall logistics process, accounting for approximately 53% of the total logistics costs. However, due to the nature of last-mile delivery, which primarily takes place in urban areas, it poses various urban issues such as traffic congestion and emissions of pollutants. To address these problems, numerous studies have proposed delivery systems utilizing new vehicles such as drones and automated delivery robots (ADRs). However, due to concerns about the unverified safety of these new vehicles, alternative delivery systems utilizing new logistics facilities like parcel lockers and crowd-shipping have also garnered attention. Additionally, the necessity and utility of gas stations is decreasing due to the recent expansion of the electric car market. Therefore, this study proposes a new delivery system that utilizes gas stations as logistics facilities (collection points). In this study, the new delivery system is approached by utilizing common optimization methodologies primarily used in Operations Research (OR). The truck and customer behaviors participating in logistics activities in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, were costed and analyzed to evaluate the economic feasibility. The proposed new delivery system is found to provide social cost-saving effects compared to existing delivery systems in certain scenarios, indicating its economic viability.
