The paper is an Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis on lived experiences of Deaf women in midlife. The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning of midlife changes experienced by Deaf women in agriculture, identify the unique changes they undergo compared to the general population, and investigate the significance of these changes. The research employed a qualitative research method, conducting in-depth individual interviews with five middle-aged Deaf women aged 40 to 59. The collected data were analyzed using Smith et al.'s (2009) interpretive phenomenological analysis.
The analysis revealed a total of 21 sub-themes and 7 main themes representing the meaning of midlife changes experienced by Deaf women in agriculture. The 7 main themes were: 'Confronting body changes that hinder communication,' 'Maintaining health amidst speech and language barriers,' 'Growing distance in relationships with close family members,' 'Encountering the reality of limited work opportunities,' 'Overcoming negative thinking through acceptance of disabilities,' 'Attempting an active life in daily routines,' and 'Dreaming of a life transcending both disability and hearing worlds.' Based on the study results, it became apparent that middle-aged Deaf women experience physical, social, and psychological changes during midlife. These changes occur within the intersections of hearing impairment, gender, and middle age, leading to unique experiences that differ from those of non-disabled women. The summarized results of midlife changes experienced by Deaf women in agriculture are as follows: First, physical changes during midlife for Deaf women included sensory decline due to aging, hearing disorders, muscle pain, menopause, and gynecological conditions. Consequently, these physical changes led to communication barriers caused by impaired vision and hearing, communication difficulties resulting from hearing disorders, and communication obstacles due to muscle pain. They had to endure menopausal symptoms with limited access to information and face health check-ups that required independent appointments without the assistance of interpreters, relying solely on speech and language. Second, social changes during midlife for Deaf women involved changes in family relationships such as parental loss, grown deaf children becoming distant, divorce, as well as changes in employment and job-seeking experiences. The social changes led to experiences of growing apart from immediate family due to the mother's death, distancing from grown deaf children, and the breakdown of long-term marital relationships. Additionally, they encountered the harsh reality of limited job opportunities through job-seeking endeavors characterized by compromised aspirations, lowered expectations, and struggles in the workplace. Third, psychological changes during midlife for Deaf women included negative emotions of loneliness, fear, and frustration caused by physical and social changes. Simultaneously, these changes prompted contemplation about the future. The psychological changes resulted in a departure from negative thinking patterns, such as regret over past shame related to disabilities, liberation from others' negative judgments, and the pursuit of abandoned dreams due to hearing impairments. They attempted to take charge of daily tasks independently, actively living within the Deaf community, aiming for a world where Deaf people are understood, desiring to become advocates for the Deaf, and preparing for the latter part of life that transcends both the Deaf and hearing worlds, while dreaming of a world without disabilities. Through this study, the significance of midlife changes experienced by Deaf women in agriculture was revealed. It was evident that they did not simply adapt to these changes but responded to them actively. They independently tackled daily tasks using their preferred means of communication, attempted to lead autonomous lives, and sought personal growth within the Deaf community. They made efforts to prepare for and create a society without disabilities, while accepting various attempts to minimize the intersecting challenges posed by hearing impairment, gender, and middle age. Based on the research findings, practical and institutional recommendations were proposed to create new pathways for Deaf women in agriculture. One of these recommendations includes expanding health promotion programs for middle-aged Deaf women.
