Information on the type and content of minerals contained in natural zeolite and the adsorption characteristics of Cs and Sr is required to use economically and effectively natural zeolite as a radioactive waste treatment agent. Recent studies on removing radioactive materials from radioactive waste have remained concentrated, although there have not been many studies in Mongolia, Korea, and the United States on removing radioactive waste using natural zeolite. Therefore, in this study, we intend to experiment on the adsorption characteristics of Cs and Sr to confirm the usability of natural zeolites from Mongolia, Korea, and the United States as radioactive waste treatment agents.
The results of an extended adsorption equilibrium experiment showed that Cs reached equilibrium in 4 hours while Sr achieved equilibrium in 8 hours. The adsorption rate of Cs was 80%, 76%, 84%, 80%, and 80% for samples M-2, M-4, M-6, K-10 and U-1 while the adsorption rate of Sr was about 18%, 21%, and 20% for samples M-2, M-6, and M-10, respectively. In addition, the results of single-component isothermal adsorption experiments, compared to the Langmuir model, the total content of M-2, M-4, M-6 and K-10 in containing 8-ring, clinoptilolite, heulandite, and mordenite minerals was high sample Cs maximum adsorption amount is 154.7, 148.8, 150.2, and 146.6 mg/g.
M-2, M-6 and K-10 sample Sr maximum adsorption amount is 29.66, 33.67 and 29.50 mg/g showed high adsorption capacity. Therefore, among the natural zeolite samples, the natural zeolite samples with high mineral content, including 8-ring and high cation exchange capacity, show high selectivity for Cs.
