This study aimed to provide a direction for the development of capacities to respond to changes in the environment, such as the issue of climate change. First, this study explored the historical and linguistic concepts of ecological sensitivity; second, it examined the human mind from the perspectives of human sciences, psychology, philosophy, and culture; third, it explored emotional competence reflecting the modern era; fourth, it proposed a concept that can complement the concept of ecological sensitivity; and finally, it revealed the mechanism of ecological sensitivity, a new concept, and its implications for environmental education. The literature review revealed that ecological sensitivity has been addressed as an essential competence in the environmental education field. However, the existing concept of ecological sensitivity is mainly focused on sensory receptivity, which is a physical response. The complex problems facing modern society may require collective capacities that go beyond the capabilities of individuals. We need new capabilities for living, and these capabilities center on the human mind. When minds are formed, ‘emotion’, ‘feeling’, and ‘affect’ matter. Antonio Damasio explained the need by linking the concepts of ‘affect' and ’conatus' mentioned in Spinoza's 『Etica』 to homeostasis, which can be a key mechanism for the psychic energy that drives behavior. Based on this discussion, the research presented the need for the ability to respond to changes in the environment. Subsequently, we analyzed the climate action declaration, which is a product of affect, in order to understand how the mind is manifested through world changes such as climate change issues. The data analysis was conducted as a qualitative study using an emotion lexicon for Korean and was divided into time series and target groups. The results of the analysis showed that the main emotions of the climate action declaration were ‘anxiety’ and ‘anger’, as well as empathy and sympathy for the victims, responsibility and solidarity. Based on the above discussion, we operationally defined ecological affect as “the ability to be sensitive to changes in the world, such as climate change issues, and to self-actualize through self-opening by communicating with self, others, and the environment by using affect energy formed by homeostasis” After that, we wanted to analyze the climate action declaration, which is the result of affect, in order to understand how people feel about changes in the environment such as climate change. Ecological affect differs from ecological sensitivity in three ways. First, ecological affect is a larger concept that encompasses ecological sensitivity and is a behavioral capacity to respond to changes in the environment; second, both capacities can be expressed through homeostasis, but they differ in terms of the intensity of the visible response; and third, ecological affect is a concept that extends to communal capacities in addition to individual capacities, and is relationship-centered rather than object-centered, such as living organisms. These discussions culminated in the development of the Ecological Affect Model (EAM). This model is a systematic, cyclical structure of emotions and feelings triggered by changes in the environment and the homeostatic defense mechanisms that operate within them. Briefly, the EAM flows as follows: situational awareness of changes in the envirnement - expression of emotions and feelings - self-awareness - activation of homeostatic defenses - self-reflection - awareness of self, others, and the environment - self-opening through learning and solidarity - expansion into an ecological self - self-actualization through engagement and action - active response to changes in the environment. In addition, the paths of transition to an unexpanded and reduced self, and regression through direct and indirect damage experiences and encounters with an expanded ecological self are also expressed. This study not only derived the EAM, but also analyzed it by comparing it with ‘Integrated Personalization of the Environment(IPE)’ and ‘Responsible Environmental Behavior(REB)’ models. Furthermore, this study suggested the possibility of ecological affect as a new affective domain and a necessary ability for ecological transformation in the era of climate crisis.
