As environmental awareness changes around the globe, more attention has been drawn to sustainability. As a result, new paradigms for sustainable life have emerged. Sustainable development, a development strategy for sustainable life, pursues the balance between the environment, society, economy, and in some studies, education. Culture and art are vital in sustaining a well-balanced life. Yet, there is a lack of discussion on art within the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted at the UN General Assembly. Thus, studies on art pieces on sustainability are urgently required. Contemporary art can be characterized as the process of dematerialization. Also, it tends to approach nature as an artistic space outside the gallery. As the field of art expands to participation and action, new discussions on contemporary art's identity and aesthetic criticism have been on the rise. Due to technical development, contemporary art is expressed through various media. New media art, which interferes with art through digital technology, consists of integrating multiple genres. The study seeks ways to vitalize new media art on sustainability in line with modern art that focuses on cooperating with the audiences and the process of art. Through literature research and pilot study, this research studies sustainable art's concept and scope to understand contemporary art further. The study classifies elements of perception in media contents into visual and sensory elements. Then, it selects the elements of new media art as converged media, interactivity, network, synesthetic expression, and expansion of space using technology to analyze new media art pieces on sustainability. The subjects of analysis are of Art Center Nabi, of ARKO Art Center, and of Whanki Museum. The result of the analysis is as the following: First, visual and sensory elements, selected as the elements of media contents perception, were applied to new media art pieces on sustainability. Second, new media art pieces on sustainability have attempted to converge art and other fields. Third, the audiences and the art pieces interacted and were connected through networks. Fourth, new media art expanded the range of senses audiences can experience using synesthetic expression. Fifth, new media artworks on sustainability expanded the possibility of being displayed at places other than galleries and art museums using technology. The study urges to sustain the discussions on new media art and sustainable art, and to promote the understanding of sustainable art not only based on culture and art but also on the environment, society, economy, and education.
