This study was conducted to predict the population trands of Black-faced spoonbills(Platalea minor) in South Korea and develop artificial breeding technology to respond to the threats faced by Black-faced spoonbills. Finally, I carried out to present a management plan for coastal breeding sites of Black-faced spoonbill. As a result of the literature review, it was found that the number of breeding sites and breeding populations in South Korea continues to increase. The breeding sites, which existed only in Incheon, Gyeonggi Bay, and Yeonggwang-gun, were expanding throughout the west coast. The main cases of damage to breeding sites were predation and nest submersion. The PVA(Population Viability Analysis) was conducted by dividing the breeding population of South Korea into three populations(Incheon Marine Population, Incheon Coast Population, and Yeonggwang Population). As a result, it was found that the Incheon marine population and the Yeonggwang population have maintained their population since reaching the carrying capacity set 23 years later. The Incheon coastal population has increased, but it has not reached its carrying capacity even after 50 years. As a result of PVA by lowering the frequency of disasters in Incheon coastal breeding sites, it was found that the population could be reached to carrying capacity in six years if no predation or nest submersion occurred. As a result of PVA by heigher carrying capacity, it was found that the population growth rate and the maximum number that could be reached were higher even when nest submersion and predation occurred at the same frequency. By applying headstarting, 31 eggs was collected in May and June 2019 from Gaksiam and Namdong Reservoir. By applying headstarting, 31 eggs was collected in May and June 2019 from Gaksiam and Namdong Reservoir. 17 eggs succeeded in artificial incubation, and six of them survived, showing a 54.8% hatching rate and 35.3% survival of fledging. Four of the survived spoonbills were released with one wild spoonbill rescued from Incheon in 2019 at the mudflats near Gaksiam in July 2020, the year after hatching. All released spoonbills attached with their own rings, and three of them were attached with transmitter. I attached transmitters to five wild spoonbills born in Gaksiam in 2020, and compare their habitat use and migration to released spoonbills. Two groups used similar homeranges until before migration after released and fledging, but the core areas were different. Among the spoonbills with transmitter attached, one released spoonbill and three wild spoonbills succeeded in migration and tracking was maintained after June 2021. Spoonbills that succeeded in migration varied in migration date, travel route, wintering site, stopover site, and flight altitude and speed at the time of migration. Except for one that died in September 2020, all four spoonbills that failed to migrate died at Republic of Korea during the wintering periods. As a result of transmitter tracking and re-observation, three out of five released spoonbills survived until one year after release, and 12 out of 19 wild spoonbills survived in the same period, indicating that the survival rate of released spoonbill by applying headstarting was similar to that of wild spoonbills. In this study, both the PVA results and actual observations showed that the Incheon ocean population increases faster than the Incheon coastal population, and the coastal breeding sites is likely to act as the ecological traps for spoonbills. In order to conservation of spoonbills, it is necessary to maintain the existing improvement efforts to increase the suitability of coastal breeding sites and establish management plan to reduce damage caused by predators and nest submersion.
