The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a Family Resilience Scale (FRS). To this end, construct factors and pilot items were developed based on the literature review. For the pilot items, the content validity was conducted twice by experts, and the final ones were determined. Among the 445 people who participated in the first survey for scale development, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were conducted on 415 people, excluding insincere responses. Afterwards, the validity was also verified for 417 people who participated in the second survey. In this study, data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 22 and IBM AMOS 22. Descriptive statistics, item reliability verification, exploratory factor analysis, and criterion-related validity were verified through IBM SPSS 22. Confirmatory factor analysis, convergent validity, discriminant validity were verified using IBM AMOS 22. The results of this study are as follows. First, as a result of the Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) of the family resilience scale, 22 items were composed from the five factors of spirituality, communication, economic stability, social support, and public support. The reliability of the family resilience scale ranged from .874 to .918, and Cronbach α (the Cronbach’s alpha estimate) by factor was .879 for spirituality, .918 for communication, .874 for economic stability, .905 for social support, and .899 for public support. Second, as a result of conducting Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to confirm the structure of the five factors derived through Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), the model fit for the factor structure was confirmed, and convergent validity and discriminant validity were confirmed. Third, in order to verify criterion-related validity of the family resilience scale, the correlation between the Korean Family Health Scale II (KFSS-II) and the Clinical Resilience Inventory (CRI) was examined. As a result, a positive correlation was found between family resilience factors and individual resilience factors. As a result of examining the correlation between family resilience factors and family health factors, there was a positive correlation between them except for ‘spirituality’ and ‘economic stability and cooperation.’ Through the above process, it was confirmed that the family resilience scale had reliability and validity. In conclusion, the significance of this study is that it developed and validated a family resilience scale that can be used generally in a situation where there is a lack of domestic scales that can measure family resilience. It is meaningful in that it is a scale developed in Korea in a situation where foreign scales are used without going through a validation process in many cases in academic research targeting Koreans. ‘Spirituality’, a factor of family resilience, is an important topic in Christian theology, and through this study, its importance has been revealed in the field of social science as well. In addition, 'public support' is significant in that it reveals the importance of support in the level of public social welfare for the problems faced by families in the 21st century. In the future, additional studies on protective factors and risk factors are needed in relation to the development of family resilience scales. Moreover, it is required to develop a 'family resilience improvement program using family resilience factors and scales' and a Korean-style family therapy model for various families in the 21st century. As a cornerstone of national health, I hope that related research for families will be actively conducted.
