Through meta-analysis, this study investigated the trends of studies on the relationship between perfectionism and depression in college students and derived the effect size. From 2000 to 2022, 36 journals and dissertations published in Korea were selected according to the selection criteria, and the overall effect size between perfectionism and depression was obtained through meta-analysis, and the effect size according to the definition of perfectionism, sub-factors of perfectionism, and the scale of perfectionism and depression. The general characteristics of the paper to be analyzed are as follows. First, the number of papers published from 2017 to 2022 (52.8%) was higher than that published from 2000 to 2016 (47.2%). Second, the mediating effect (80.6%) was the most common of all research methods. Third, this paper (66.7%) maladaptively defined perfectionism accounted for a large proportion compared to papers on multidimensional perfectionism (30.6%) and papers on adaptive perfectionism (4.2%). Fourth, as for the perfectionism scale, HMPS, the multidimensional perfectionism scale developed by Hewitt and Flett (1991) accounted for 55.6%, and the mixed scale that mixed sub-factors of several scales accounted for 36.1%. Fifth, CES-D (58.3%) and BDI (35.1%) were widely used as depression scales. Next, the main results confirmed through meta-analysis are as follows. First, the overall effect size between perfectionism and depression showed an intermediate effect size. Second, when looking at the effect size according to the definition of perfectionism, maladaptive perfectionism and evaluation concern perfectionism showed significant effect sizes above depression, but adaptive perfectionism and individual-standard perfectionism were unrelated to depression. Third, when looking at the effect size according to the perfectionism scale, the effect size was the largest in the mixed scale , followed by FMPS, the multidimensional perfectionism scale developed by Frost et al.(1990) and HMPS. Fourth, looking at the effect size according to the sub-factors of perfectionism, the 'Discrepancy' of APS-R showed a large effect size, FMPS's 'Parental Criticism', 'Doubts about Actions', 'Concern over Mistakes', and HMPS's 'Social-Prescribed Perfectionism' showed a significant effect size of medium or higher. Fifth, when looking at the effect size according to the depression scale, SCL-90-R showed a large effect size, followed by Zung, CES-D, and BDI. This study is meaningful in that it examined the relationship of depression according to the definition, scale, and sub-factors of perfectionism of college students, presented the direction of future research, and discussed implications for improving the mental health of college students.
