This article examines the influence of Bergson’s concept of “Duration” on light and color in modern painting and explains how to break away from the symbolic and metaphorical representation of light and color towards the portrayal of time as fixed, transforming it into an expression that injects a sense of vitality and the concept of “Duration”. In modern painting, the concept of “Duration” is closely intertwined with the forms, images, and aesthetic expressions of light and color. Artists focus on painting forms that emphasize the representation of light and color, and these forms have gradually diversified with the development of science and technology and the changing social background. Given this background, many artists are increasingly devoted to visualizing and aestheticizing their own understanding of life and time through art. The artists’ understanding of life or time manifests through unique perspectives and symbolic representations of light and color. To interpret through diverse perspectives such as individual consciousness, human collective relationships, or open-mindedness, they involve the utilization of light as an artistic medium, the depiction of the cyclic nature of light and repetitive meanings of color, and various techniques for representing light and color, including gradients and textures. Through their artwork, artists fully demonstrate the representation of this concept of Duration, the expressive value of light and color, and the hidden potential they possess. Firstly, from a theoretical perspective, Bergson’s concept of “Duration” can be summarized as follows. In Bergson‘s philosophy of life, life is intimately related to human consciousness and is always in a process of change, generation, and creation. From Bergson’s theory of Duration, Duration is the essential factor of life, and its description of time and life is interconnected, both being processes of constant change and generation. The time of Duration is indivisible and immeasurable, and its constant change stems from the continuous development of the past, with an unpredictable future that is constantly renewed. The transformation of the concept of Duration into the realm of art is a continuous process of artistic creation, artwork presentation, and artistic appreciation, encompassing the characteristics of Duration. Furthermore, based on this philosophical understanding, the concept of Duration has been examined by artists through the universal expressive features of light and color. From the perspective of color theory research represented by Goethe or the historical development of art history, the visual representation of light and color in art extends beyond the reproduction of natural phenomena, encompassing metaphorical and symbolic significance closely related to the artist’s spirit and consciousness. This inseparable connection with the processes of life and time can be said to be associated with the concept of “Duration”. Building upon the metaphorical and symbolic value of light and color, in modern art, the representation of light and color revolves around the central concept of continuity and can be observed from three aspects. Firstly, in artworks that utilize light as a medium, by creating a temporal and spatial environment of light, visitors are immersed in a sense of engagement, encapsulating the unlimited Duration attributes bestowed upon the artwork by the artist and the viewer’s participation. Secondly, artists of the Impressionist movement, with Monet as a representative example, embarked on a groundbreaking exploration of natural light and color, discovering the temporal significance that surpasses the mere depiction of concrete time and infusing the artworks with a sense of temporal consciousness. Subsequently, in modern art focused on color expression, artists fully utilize the metaphorical and symbolic role of light and color, aesthetically and visually transforming the concept of Duration through the dimension of repetitive cycles. The third aspect involves the embodiment of the concept of Duration through the expression of light and color, finding theoretical foundations and universal manifestations through the employment of two stylistic techniques: gradient and texture. It can be said that the theories and ideas of gradient fully embody the concept of Duration, emphasizing the progressive, continuous, and imperceptible nature of developmental processes, while valuing constant change and generation. The gradient technique in painting portrays light and color, making the process of gradient and Duration more vivid. Furthermore, the texture used to represent light and color in paintings triggers a psychological perception of temporal attributes in both artists and viewers. Artists create textures that evoke a sense of resonance among visitors while embodying the concept of Duration. It can be said that the works of pioneering artists have elevated their personal understanding of life and time to a universal and continuous human consciousness. Huang Yuxing depicts the symbolism of time and life through the texture of fluorescent and dynamic colors, portraying the eternal continuity and multidimensional changes of life and temporality through elements such as rivers, whirlpools, and bubbles. Kimsooja expands the concept of envelopment through the rainbow spectrum, symbolizing the repetitive condensation and permeation of human consciousness. That is, the linear flow of time centered on the self extends from the holistic dimension of human consciousness to the repetition of Duration in time. Olafur Eliasson delves deeply into Bergson’s concept of Duration, integrating his own creative ideas into the artworks by recreating artificial light sources to mimic natural light environments, thus infinitely expanding past memories within immersive and impactful sensory experiences. By stimulating the audience with the differences between virtual and real spaces, it continually evokes new insights and completes the process of Duration. In the researcher’s artwork analysis, the concept of Duration serves as the centerpiece, with the artistic practice focused on the representation of light and color. The researcher’s works encompass various expressive methods, including color gradients and vibrant textures in two-dimensional paintings, installations, videos, sculptures, and the integration of light and shadow, to portray light and color. The researcher divides this body of work into three main parts. Firstly, the researcher explores the selective nature, uncertainty, and continuous generation of memory as the foundation of continuity, with color gradients and textures as the primary modes of expression. By extracting the essential elements of light and color from memories of objects or natural imagery, the researcher symbolically represents their understanding of life and time. Through the creation of gradient and dynamically textured forms using pigments, the basic understanding of memory and persistence is visualized. Therefore, this can be understood as a combination of conceptual creation and artwork presentation, emphasizing the concept of Duration. Secondly, the researcher focuses on the representation of projected light and its colors, delving into the metaphorical and conceptual aspects of light and color, as well as the concept of Duration. This section of the work centers around the themes of life cycles and self-healing, metaphorically conveying the concepts of cyclicality and continuity through the periodic motion of luminous celestial bodies. Based on special materials and manipulations of light sources, this part breaks free from the depiction of natural light and physical phenomena, highlighting the independent value of color and the spiritual, emotional, and symbolic significance of light. Furthermore, through the relationship between projected light and physical entities in terms of color repetition and differentiation, the metaphorical concepts of repetition and continuity are conveyed, expressing the significance of Duration from a broader perspective. Additionally, the conceptual expression places emphasis on the viewers’ appreciation process, allowing them to combine their own experiences with a thoughtful understanding of the researcher’s creative intent, resulting in unique insights during the experiential process. Consequently, the concept of Duration is realized throughout the three interconnected artistic activities of creation, artwork, and appreciation. Thirdly, the researcher creates an immersive experience by employing expansive light and color, stimulating viewers’ open-mindedness and conveying the enduring generation of life and time within the concept of Duration. Through visual representation, the subjective modulation of color spreading in water is captured, replicating the duration of time and its ever-changing process. Furthermore, using imaging technology as a medium, the artwork records the transformation process of light and color, incorporating their rich symbolism and metaphorical significance. Furthermore, it guides visitors to authentically experience the concept of Duration during their observation. The artificial manipulation of light sources was employed to break the boundaries between the artwork and the viewer, establishing an immersive viewing environment. Consequently, the viewers’ comprehension initiates multilayered reflections on time and life. The immersive and open-ended experience created through light and color becomes a conduit for the artist’s creative concept and the viewer’s realization of Duration. In this phase of creation, the researcher primarily endeavors to attenuate the subjective limitations imposed on thematic expression, fully integrating the continuous process of life and time into the appreciation experience. In terms of the direction of artistic creation, this study expands the representation of light and color through the concept of Duration, surpassing the mechanical reproduction of natural light and color phenomena and proposing new possibilities for integrating the concept of Duration into their expression. To accomplish this, the researcher incorporates mixed materials, artificial light sources, images, and installations as modern mediums in their artworks, exploring and developing a novel mode of expressing light and color. Grounded in the symbolism and metaphorical representation of light and color, the study creates an emphasis on continuous change and generation within the concept of Duration, transcending the subjective emotions and consciousness of the researcher. Furthermore, immersive imagery and installations maintain the continuous generation of the artworks’ themes, guiding viewers to become co-creators of the artistic experience and emphasizing the role of visitors in realizing the artistic purpose. As such, the representation of light and color holds universal significance and continually generates new meanings through the process of experience. In this regard, the researcher discovers the value of the concept of Duration in artistic activities, uncovers the expressive potential of light and color, and creates and encapsulates distinctive artworks that highlight individual characteristics. However, it is worth noting that this study is primarily focused on personal experiences and perspectives, with the premise of demonstrating the feasibility and necessity of expressing light, color, and the concept of persistence. Therefore, there are limitations in this aspect of the study. Furthermore, the researcher’s personal artistic inclination may not fully reflect the representation of light and color embodying the “Duration” concept as explored in contemporary art within the study’s artistic practice, which is another inherent limitation. Nonetheless, these shortcomings provide insights and hold significant value for the continuous development of the researcher’s future work. The researcher examines Bergson’s concept of Duration in philosophical discourse on life and discusses the interpretation of light and color in art. In the future, with advancements in technology and materials, light and color, possessing infinite potential for development, will create limitless possibilities for expressing the concept of Duration. As metaphors and symbols of light and color, the concept of Duration will further deepen and expand its significance in aspects such as self-awareness, time consciousness, and the interconnectedness of individuals and society. Therefore, the researcher aspires to continue exploring this field in their future artistic endeavors.
