Sea fog is a marine and meteorological disaster that causes damage to people's lives and property at sea and in the sky, such as marine accidents, delays in shipping and logistics, hindered airline operations, and traffic accidents. However, in the prediction of sea fog, there have been limitations in improving the prediction accuracy due to the limitations of oceanographic and meteorological observation data, prediction errors of numerical models, and the lack of a conceptual sea fog model.
In order to solve the above problems, this study conducted a statistical analysis of changes in the occurrence of sea fog using observation data from the Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) and other maritime organizations and conducted case analyses to verify these statistics based on the Hwanghae Coast (Gyeonggi Bay) and the Southeast Coast (Busan and Tongyeong Seas). We aimed to improve the prediction error of the UM numerical model through post-processing of fog guidance based on the UM model output and presented a conceptual sea fog model to improve the prediction accuracy of forecasters and artificial intelligence-driven sea fog forecasting models.
First, we investigated the temporal changes and characteristics of sea fog occurrence due to climate change. The temporal changes and characteristics of sea fog occurrence have changed due to the difference in the temperature increase rate between air and seawater temperatures under climate change. Statistical analysis shows that the inversion date of the Air-Sea Temperature Difference (ASTD, Air temperature-Seawater Temperature) in the five regions where localized sea fog mainly occurs has been accelerating by an average of 0.4 days/year over the past 20 years. In the past, the frequency of steam fog and advection was between March 5 and 6, but in recent years, it has been found that the frequency has changed around February 26 and 27, which is about 8 days earlier. By region, Chilbaldo, which affects Mokpo, has the highest frequency of 1.0 days, and Deokjeokdo, which affects Gimpo Airport, has the second highest frequency of about 0.5 days. On the other hand, Geojedo, which affects Busan, was the lowest at about 0.1 days. The frequency and observation duration of sea fog were highest in Incheon and Mokpo, located on the Yellow Sea, and lowest in Busan and Changwon.
The fog developed strongly when an inversion layer formed below an altitude of about 200 meters from the sea surface, and the fog mostly weakened or dissipated as the inversion layer weakened within 3 hours after sunrise. In addition, ASTDs were mostly distributed between 0.8°C and 3.0°C for advection fog and between -1.0°C and -3.4°C for steam fog. Wind speeds were mostly between 2.1 m/s and 4.9 m/s in the advection fog and between 2.0 m/s and 4.6 m/s in the steam fog.
To improve the numerical model error, statistical data were analyzed through case verification. The case study was based on the Hwanghae Coast (Gyeonggi Bay) and the Southeast Coast (Busan-Tongyeong Sea), which respectively affect Incheon Port including Incheon-Gimpo Airport, and Busan Port including Gimhae Airport and Gadeokdo New Airport. The analysis showed that steam fog and advection fog occurred at temperatures lower than the dew point temperature, not at the dew point temperature. When the results were compared with the saturated vapor curve based on the dew point temperature between 5℃ and 19℃, the difference between water vapor content and saturated water vapor content was 1.0g (0.5g ~ 1.6g) on average for steam fog, and 1.5g (0.0g ~ 2.1g) on average for advection fog. In conclusion, the air temperature should be lower than the dew point temperature until the water vapor content of 0.0g to 2.1g condenses. In this case study, the inversion layer of the UM numerical model was weaker than that of KIM and ECMWF models, which is one of the error sources in the UM-based fog guidance.
A sea fog case was selected to improve UM-based fog guidance using a correction constant for dew point temperature and a post-processing technique to correct the inversion layer. Overall, the underestimation of steam fog was partially improved, and the overestimation of advection fog was improved. In conclusion, applying the results of this study as a post-processing technique can improve the prediction performance of the UM model.
In order to improve the forecasting accuracy of forecasters and to help create training data for artificial intelligence models by using the numerical model, we presented daily variation diagrams for steam fog and advection fog using the statistical results and case studies. The daily evolution diagrams describe the generation of steam and advection fogs, their inflow to the coast and development, their subsequent weakening and dissipation, and their transformation into radiation fog.
In conclusion, this study shows that there is some improvement in the forecast performance in the UM-based fog guidance. However, given the characteristics of UM numerical model that lacks air-sea coupling and simulates convection strongly, there are fundamental limitations in improving the prediction accuracy of sea fog, which is sensitive to the ASTD and the inversion layer of air temperature. To overcome these two problems, it is necessary to expand and integrate the ocean observation network, develop an 'air-sea coupling localized sea fog prediction model', and research to develop better prediction performance of numerical models using artificial intelligence. In addition, these findings will contribute to the prevention of safety accidents caused by sea fog in ports and airports in the future.
