The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a number of studies on the vectors that spread the virus. Viruses are known to be primarily transmitted by droplets larger than 5 μm, and recent studies have shown that aerosols can also act as vectors, depending on environmental conditions. Other studies have shown that when virus particles bind to aerosols, the virus can be transmitted over longer distances (>2 m) and remain airborne compared to droplets. In addition to virus control, aerosol control is essential to prevent the spread of the virus. In this study, in order to simultaneously manage particulates and viruses in aerosols, a device that generates electrostatic force was developed and its removal performance was evaluated. The reduction devices evaluated in this study are ionizer type, rotary type, and non-powered type brush filter. Study 1(Chapter 2) evaluated the particle removal performance of an ionizer-type brush filter that generates corona discharges by applying high voltage. The ionizer-type brush filter showed a reduction efficiency of 99.7 % for PM10 at a flow rate of 0.5 m/s when -7 kV was applied. The dust collection performance improved as the voltage increased and the flow rate decreased, and the dust collection efficiency decreased for particles below 0.3 μm and above 0.5 μm at relatively low voltages. In addition, the virus inactivation performance was 99.9 ± 0.2 % for the carbon fiber brush filter at -3 kV, 98.8 ± 0.6% for the copper brush filter, and 87.7 ± 2.3 % for the stainless steel brush filter. Study 2(Chapter 3) evaluated the particle removal performance of a rotary brush filter using electrostatic forces generated by the rotational force of the brushes instead of a high voltage application. The particle removal efficiencies of the rotary brush filter were 74.0 ± 3.5, 90.3 ± 1.9, 87.1 ± 2.1, and 90.3 ± 2.0 % at rotational speeds of 0, 30, 45, and 60 rpm, respectively. When analyzing the causes of particle removal according to the particle diameter, the particle diameter below 4.884 μm was affected more by electrostatic force than by the structure of the brush, while the particle diameter above 4.884 μm was affected more by the structure of the brush. Furthermore, when the structure of the module was improved to increase the residence time of the particles in the brush, the particle removal performance did not change significantly for particle diameters above 4.884 μm, but for particle diameters below 4.884 μm, the particle removal rate was improved due to the increase in residence time. Study 3(Chapter 4) evaluated the particle removal performance of non-powered brush filters using electrostatic forces generated by the friction of brushes and PVC rods in the presence of airflow without the use of a power source. The dust collection performance of the non-powered brush filter varied depending on the material, and particle removal efficiency was 82.1 ± 3.4, 76.1 ± 4.7, and 73.7 ± 4.5% for horsehair, nylon, and stainless steel, respectively. The particle removal efficiencies were relatively low at 58.2 ± 8.4, 53.6 ± 9.2, and 58.0 ± 7.3 % when the fan was not operated to show the effect of airflow. Then, when the number of brushes in the horsehair material was varied to densify the structure of the brush, the particle removal performance increased up to 89.6 ± 2.2 %. When the density of the nylon brush filter was increased, the particle removal performance was up to 88.3 ± 3.2 %, and when the density of the stainless steel brush filter was increased, the dust collection performance was up to 82.1 ± 3.8 %. In the virus test of the non-powered brush filter, a nylon brush filter was used to increase the inactivation rate, and the inactivation performance was evaluated according to the change of flow rate. The virus inactivation rate was 45.1 % when electrostatic force was not generated, and the virus inactivation performance improved to 70.9, 82.5, and 86.3 % as the flow rate increased to 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 m/s. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of a reduction device that simultaneously manages particulates and viruses using a brush filter that generates electrostatic force. The study showed that the brush filter used in the study has the potential to manage particulates and viruses simultaneously, unlike existing reduction devices, and is expected to solve the ozone generation problem of existing high-voltage reduction devices.
