This study aimed to contribute to the design of lessons (focusing on horticultural education) in schools using ChatGPT, by developing and comparing edible plant project learning programs based on expert knowledge (traditional curriculum design) and ChatGPT (recently released ChatGPT-4 by OpenAI).
To achieve this, a review of previous studies on edible plant project learning and educational use of ChatGPT was conducted, and an expert-based edible plant project learning program, which serves as a control group for the ChatGPT-based learning, was developed. Subsequently, a program on the same topic using ChatGPT was developed, with 'prompt engineering' to select relevant prompts (commands) as a preliminary procedure, thus enhancing the program's completion. After developing both programs, the content was compared and analyzed. Furthermore, the advantages and disadvantages of using ChatGPT in lesson design were analyzed to examine educational suitability, and a survey was conducted on teachers' perception of its applicability in actual school situations. The conclusions drawn from this study are as follows: First, an expert-based edible plant project learning program was developed for sixth-grade elementary students. The program's objective was set to 'improve students' eating habits through edible plant project learning,' and a ten-lesson subproject learning program was planned to achieve this goal. Second, prompt engineering was conducted for ChatGPT-based program development, setting the principles of 'General-to-Specific' search approach and 'providing specific examples (Few-shot learning).' Third, based on the results of prompt engineering, expert-based and ChatGPT-based programs on the same topic were developed. The 'ADDIE' model, a systematic education design model, was referred to for program development stages, devising a four-step procedure of 'demonstration,' 'topic selection,' 'lesson plan development,' and 'evaluation and feedback.' Key prompts for each development stage were selected to facilitate generalization. Fourth, a comparison between expert-based and ChatGPT-based lesson design revealed that ChatGPT-based lesson design could save instructors' time and effort, enable personalized lesson planning, easily incorporate the latest trends in education, and be advantageous in discovering and applying diverse educational materials. However, it was also found that it could limit teachers' creative lesson planning, potentially provide inaccurate information, make it difficult to prepare a lesson plan according to the teacher's purpose and intention, and possibly lead to unrealistic lesson planning. Fifth, a survey on teachers' perception of ChatGPT showed that while most teachers were interested in ChatGPT, its use in lesson planning and activities was not widespread. In the comparison between expert-based and ChatGPT-based programs, teachers primarily chose 'saving time and effort' and 'discovery and application of various teaching materials' as the advantages of the ChatGPT-based program, and 'potential for providing inaccurate information' and 'possibility of unrealistic lesson planning' as disadvantages. Sixth, teachers who responded to the survey anticipated that the role of future teachers would be strengthened or similar even if ChatGPT is used in lesson design. They determined that future teachers should be responsible for using AI technology and act as experts, being able to use ChatGPT proactively and critically. This study aimed to provide an example of a specific method that can be applied when planning a lesson using ChatGPT, and to help in lesson design utilizing ChatGPT, focused on horticulture education, by examining various aspects to consider during lesson planning. For effective education utilizing ChatGPT in the future, additional research into various lesson planning and practical case studies will be required beyond the results of this study. In particular, a variety of attempts and studies applying ChatGPT to elementary school horticulture education are needed. Furthermore, there is a need for substantial teacher training and education regarding the educational use of AI chatbots like ChatGPT. As the development of AI technology is expected to bring about significant changes in the future, additional research on the role of teachers in the school field should also be conducted.
