The purpose of the study was to explore the latent groups within the single-person households of office workers from a positive psychological perspective, with the goal of understanding the psychological characteristics of each group and exploring differences in psychological adaptation levels among them. Additionally, within the latent groups, the study focuses on the adaptively coping group of individuals in single-person households to analyze how they experience time alone and to explore adaptive coping strategies for cultivating a positive experience during alone time. In Study 1, a total of 563 single person household workers completed a research packet that included measures of self-determined solitude, adult attachment, and basic psychological needs, and UCLA loneliness, CES-D, Interpersonal relationship problems, social connectedness, and demographic information. The data were analyzed by using latent profile analysis and multivariate analysis. The results revealed three latent groups based on the level of self-determined solitude, adult attachment, and basic psychological needs. The first group ‘maladaptive non-solitude seeking group’ indicated that the level of self-determined solitude and basic psychological needs were low but the level of avoidant attachment was high. The second group ‘maladaptive solitude seeking group’ indicated that the level of self-determined solitude, anxiety and avoidant attachment were high but basic psychological needs were low. The third group ‘adaptive solitude seeking group’ indicated that the level of self-determined solitude, basic psychological needs were high but anxiety and avoidant attachment were low. In addition, the results indicated that the maladaptive non-solitude seeking group had the highest level of loneliness, and both the non-solitude seeking group and maladaptive solitude seeking group showed elevated levels of depression and interpersonal relationship problems compared to the adaptive solitude seeking group, demonstrating significant differences. The adaptive solitude seeking group displayed the lowest levels of loneliness, depression, and interpersonal relationship problems, along with the highest level of social connectedness, confirming the most positive psychological characteristics among the latent groups and adaptive living in single-person household life. The implications of the psychological characteristics of each group and their impact on the lives of individuals in single-person households were discussed. In study 2, in-depth interview for 9 members of the adaptive solitude seeking group was conducted to explore their experience as a single-person household worker. The data were analyzed using a consensus-based qualitative research method, resulting in six areas, 18 categories, and 54 subcategories. These six areas included ‘Formation and process of single-person household’, ‘Experiences in single-person household living’, ‘Efforts for maintaining adaptive single-person household’, ‘Achievements through efforts for single-person household adaptation’, ‘What is needed for adapting to a single-person household’, and ‘Meaning of single-person household life’. Through these results, the coping strategies and positive resources of adaptive individuals in single person household were indentified. Finally, the implications and limitations of the study were discussed.
