A Study on Control Strategy Analysis and Performance Evaluation for Optimal Power Distribution of a New Structure Hybrid System Equipped with Multiple Motors
TAs global carbon emission regulations tighten, there's a surge in technological research within the automotive industry to reduce carbon emissions. Consequently, there's a growing interest in electric and hybrid vehicles, with a particular focus on the combination of SUVs and hybrid technology.
The European Commission, based on the 2019 Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), raises concerns about CO2 emissions from electric cars, especially considering CO2 emissions during electricity generation. This uncertainty challenges the regulatory compliance of electric cars, leading to increased attention on hybrid vehicles. Hybrid SUVs, however, face difficulties meeting emission regulations due to their high power characteristics, necessitating improvements in fuel efficiency.
Various hybrid systems are being researched for efficiency, classified into P0 to P4 systems based on motor positions. P0 and P1 have a single-axis structure where the engine and motor share the same axis, providing advantages in absorbing kinetic energy during regenerative braking. P2 has a dual-axis structure, allowing independent control of the engine. P3, applied after the gearbox, offers high transmission efficiency. P4 has separate motor-driven axles, enabling torque vectoring but with drawbacks of increased motor weight and space requirements.
Though research on vehicles simultaneously incorporating P1-P2-P4 systems is scarce, the potential advantages include enhanced energy recovery and efficient power distribution despite increased motor weight. Therefore, research has been conducted on the control of multi-motor power distribution in large SUV hybrid vehicles.
This paper analyzes the configuration and characteristics of a vehicle with P1-P2-P4 systems, studying control strategies for optimal power distribution using three motors to improve fuel efficiency. A backward analysis model, developed using MATLAB Simulink, enables the analysis of the multi-motor hybrid system. Optimization methods for torque distribution among P1-P2-P4 motors were explored. To apply the backward analysis method to real vehicles, a method considering characteristics such as gear patterns, rotational inertia, and efficiency was devised. Hysteresis was applied during gear pattern application, and algorithms for determining HEV Mode-EV Mode and torque distribution strategy for the rear P4 motor were derived and studied.
A forward analysis model, developed using MATLAB Simulink, validated the performance of the control map through simulation. The model, comprising mechanical, electrical, control, driver, and other components, improved simulation speed with a lumped analysis model exhibiting minimal dynamic behavior. The developed control map was applied to the analysis model for simulation, validating the performance of the control map. Through this, methods for multi-motor power distribution control in large SUV hybrid vehicles were proposed, and research results were obtained.
