I investigate how a firm’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance rating, combined with the use of jargon in ESG disclosure, jointly affect the firm’s management credibility and investors’ willingness to invest, using an experiment. Based on prior literature and psychological theories, I predict that a firm’s good ESG performance with ESG -related jargon use in its disclosure will increase management credibility and investment willingness. However, poor ESG performance and jargon use will decrease management credibility, which leads to lower investment willingness. As a result, I find a pattern that aligns with the hypotheses although the values are insignificant. Moreover, the effect of management credibility is insignificant. These findings have contributions to related literature and can inform managers and investors about how ESG disclosure can impact decision-making.
