Recently, human-induced land cover and land use (LCLU) changes have intensified with the enhancement of social and economic activities. The unprecedented LCLU changes have been affecting the Earth system, particularly since the late 20th century. The land cover state can alter not only the local weather and climate but also the regional and global climate circulation patterns. Considering the massive human-induced LCLU changes across the East Asian region, the LCLU changes and their effects on the physical state of land surface and the chemical composition of the atmosphere, which potentially induce changes in the monsoon climates, need to be quantified. Numerous modeling studies have verified the biogeophysical effects of land cover on climate systems. However, empirical studies based on remotely sensed LCLU maps to investigate the effects of LCLU changes on the climate are relatively rare.
In this study, we focus on the impact of the LCLU transitions over the East Asian monsoon region on regional temperature changes. AVHRR GIMMS NDVI3g data from 1982 to 2015 were used to examine the overall vegetation distribution and changes over the Asian continent. To explore the LCLU changes in the East Asian monsoon region, we used fractional maps generated from this study. For temperature data, we used the ERA5-Land reanalysis, which showed the highest consistency with observations over the East Asian monsoon region.
To examine the spatial pattern of the long-term average LCLU types (croplands, forests, grasslands) in the East Asian monsoon region, we used the validated fractional maps. Croplands were the major land cover types in northeastern and central China and the western Korean Peninsula. Forests were dominant in central and southern China, the eastern Korean Peninsula, and Japan. Grasslands were mainly distributed in Inner Mongolia. In the results of a linear regression of the fractional patterns of croplands, forests, and grasslands, croplands significantly increased in northeastern China, North Korea, the marginal areas of Inner Mongolia in western China, and southern Japan and decreased in central China, South Korea, and central and northern Japan. Forests significantly decreased in the eastern part of northeastern China, North Korea, and southern Japan and increased in central China, South Korea, the marginal areas of Inner Mongolia in western China, and central and northern Japan. Furthermore, grasslands significantly decreased in the western part of northeastern China and the marginal areas of Inner Mongolia.
Based on the results of the linear regression trend analysis, five sub-regions ((1) the western part of northeastern China, (2) the eastern part of northeastern China, (3) the marginal areas of Inner Mongolia in western China, (4) the Sichuan region, and (5) North Korea) in the EAM region with significant LCLU changes were selected. Within the five sub-regions, we investigate the LCLU transitions. In the western part of northeastern China, the transition of grasslands to croplands was dominant, and in the eastern part of northeastern China, the transition of forests to croplands was dominant. In the marginal areas of Inner Mongolia in western China and the Sichuan region, where ecological protection policies have been implemented, the transitions of grasslands to croplands and forests and croplands to forests were evident, respectively. In North Korea, the transition between croplands and forests was dominant, and the transition was opposite between the southwestern and northern regions. We selected the two sub-regions with faster increasing trends of the 2m temperature over the 34 years compared to the other sub-regions (the Sichuan region and the marginal areas of Inner Mongolia in western China) to explore the relationships of 2m temperature with the LCLU transitions. In the Sichuan region where croplands dominantly transitioned to forests, the variation of both croplands and forests showed positive associations with larger temperature change by the increased forests fraction than that by the decreased croplands fraction. The transition in the Sichuan region could affect the regional warming because of the increase in the warming effect of forests in the high altitudes as well as the decrease in the cooling effect of irrigation. In the marginal areas of Inner Mongolia in western China, grasslands dominantly transitioned to croplands and forests. The decrease of the grasslands fraction was negatively correlated with temperature, while the increase of the croplands and forests fractions was positively correlated with temperature. Moreover, the temperature increased as the grasslands decreased and forests increased. In the marginal areas of Inner Mongolia in western China, the temperature could have increased due to the increase in regional warming effects caused by the transitions of grasslands to croplands and forests.
The effects on the regional climate may vary depending on geographical factors such as regional altitude, latitude, and species of vegetation. Furthermore, this regional climate change in the EAM region can potentially affect the intensity and variability of the monsoon systems by changing the contrast in heat between the land and ocean. Therefore, land cover policies such as reforestation neet to be implemented while considering the geographically diverse impacts of LCLU transitions on the regional climate.
