Various chemicals used in small and large industries cause harmful incidents and local environmental pollutions to water and soil as well as atmosphere. Since the emission regulation of air pollutants has been implemented in 2017, consideration for neighboring areas has emerged as a major concern for manufacturing companies. Nevertheless, because the government could not sufficiently monitor small industries, civic complaints frequently occur. The emission of harmful gases from point sources was traced by theoretical models such as CALPUFF recommended by US EPA; SCREEN3 a screening model; KORA, an evaluation model for hazardous chemical dispersion distributed by Ministry of Environment of Korea; and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), a numerical analysis simulation tool. These model predictions were then compared each other based on field monitoring data. Test flue gas was toluene which was found at high concentrations in target point sources. CALPUFF with the input value of the emission concentration of 0.0951 ppm estimated the landing concentration at 600 m from the source stack to be 0.00017 ppm. This value was significantly lower than field data because CALPUFF primarily is used for long distance predictions rather than surrounding areas. SCREEN3 also showed very low value, representing only 1.05 % of field data. Since SCREEN3 uses only a few parameters including stack height and diameter, exhaust gas flow rate, flue gas temperature and atmospheric temperature, it may lead to potential errors deviating from real situations. KORA model, which was developed to assess the influencing area due to chemical accidents using following information: weather condition, discharged substances, operation pressure, and local condition, revealed the ground concentration of 17.97 ppm at 9.8 m from the stack. Surface topography and local geometry are important parameters that influence the dispersion extent of discharged gases, and this study confirmed that CFD technique is the fundamental model for adequately simulating short-range dispersion including building downwash.
