Recently, the cloud market has seen a significant increase in the introduction of PaaS (Platform as a Service) services, which provide various 3rd Party solutions, network services, system software, and application deployment in the form of a platform. While developing applications is an important aspect in web services, designing and operating the middleware that runs them is also crucial. In the web environment, middleware is primarily serviced under the name WAS (Web Application Server). WAS operating in a distributed environment must support session clustering to maintain login among instances. This paper investigates whether session clustering operates properly when multiple Pods are created and deleted simultaneously during Scale-In/Out and Rolling Update operations in a PaaS environment.
WAS supports a distributed session clustering method internally. The distributed session clustering method operates by replicating session data to other nearby servers among WAS instances. When replicating session data, the number of backup servers is specified so that session data can be retrieved from another server even if all backup servers are shut down. However, a problem arises where some session data is lost if both the designated backup server and master server are shut down.
In this paper, after building a PaaS environment using Kubernetes, we confirmed through testing that login information is lost when using the distributed session clustering method during Scale-In/Out and Rolling Update operations. Although we suggest tuning the Redundancy parameter for the number of session backup servers as a solution, we will also consider the limitations of distributed session clustering. To overcome the limitations of distributed session clustering, we confirmed through testing that login information is maintained 100% even when multiple Pods are deleted simultaneously by using a centralized session clustering method utilizing IMDG (In-Memory Data Grid). As a result of the test, we suggest that to operate WAS stably in a PaaS environment, it is advisable to avoid using distributed session clustering and to use centralized session clustering using IMDG as an improvement measure.
