This doctoral dissertation presents comprehensive research on developing highly efficient catalysts for water electrolysis and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) applications, crucial for sustainable energy technologies. The study encompasses two main themes: the enhancement of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts using layered double hydroxide (LDH) structures on transition-metal substrates and the advancement of zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF)-based electrocatalysts for ORR in fuel cell cathodes. In Chapter I, we focus on the growth of LDH structures on hollow nickel mesospheres (hNi) synthesized via a template-free reflux method. The acid-treated hNi (hNiH) promoted the formation of a three-dimensional hierarchical hNiH@NiFe-OH structure with an LDH framework, regulated by Fe(II) ions and an optimal chloride ion concentration. The hNiH@NiFe-OH catalyst displayed superior electrocatalytic activity for the OER, outperforming references such as hNi, Fe nanowires, hNi@NiFe, and commercial iridium/carbon (Ir/C) catalysts. It achieved the lowest overpotential value (288 mV at 10 mA cm-2) and a Tafel slope of 37 mV dec-1, demonstrating remarkable stability with minimal overpotential increase over extended cycles. In Chapter II, the polyol synthesis method enhanced with hydrazine was used to synthesize CoCu-ZIF precursors for ORR catalysis, achieving a unique pseudo-rhombic dodecahedron morphology at the optimal Co to Cu molar ratio of 7:3. The nitrogen-doped carbon nanostructure embedded with cobalt and copper nanoparticles (CoCu@NC-750), pyrolyzed at 750°C, exhibited exceptional ORR catalytic performance with low overpotentials and a clear four-electron transfer mechanism. CoCu@NC-750 maintained its efficiency over 10,000 cyclic voltammetry (CV) cycles and showed significant stability and minimal current density decrease over a 12-h ORR process, outperforming commercial Pt/C. The results from both chapters highlight the potential of using novel materials and synthesis methods for developing catalysts that could replace expensive and less durable materials in energy conversion devices. This research contributes to the field of sustainable energy technologies by providing efficient and cost-effective alternatives for OER and ORR applications, particularly in the context of fuel cells and water electrolysis.
