The purpose of this study was to investigate the structural relationship among socially prescribed perfectionism, fear of negative evaluation, perfectionistic self–presentation, self-discrepancy, and social anxiety. Based on the related theoretical model of perfectionism and social anxiety, a research model was proposed, in which socially prescribed perfectionism and fear of negative evaluation were posited as independent variables and perfectionistic self–presentation and self–discrepancy as mediator variables. To examine the model, this survey was conducted to a sample of 542 college students using the measure of socially prescribed perfectionism, fear of negative evaluation, perfectionistic self–presentation, and self-discrepancy. The date was analyzed by the Structural Equation Modeling(SEM).
The results of the study are as follows: First, social anxiety had significant correlations with socially prescribed perfectionism, fear of negative evaluation, perfectionistic self–presentation, and self-discrepancy. Second, perfectionistic self–presentation had significant mediating effects on the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and social anxiety. Third, self-discrepancy had significant mediating effects on the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and social anxiety. Fourth, perfectionistic self–presentation did not mediate the relationship between fear of negative evaluation and social anxiety. Fifth, self-discrepancy had significant mediating effects on the relationship between fear of negative evaluation and social anxiety. In the final section of this thesis, some limitations of the current study are discussed along with future research suggestions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the structural relationship among socially prescribed perfectionism, fear of negative evaluation, perfectionistic self–presentation,
